House Oversight Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) has requested documents related to the apparent politicization of a Bush administration report on global health.
In a letter sent Monday to Health and Human Services Secretary Michael O. Leavitt, Waxman notes a recent report that a Bush political appointee prevented publication of the 2006 "Call to Action on Global Health" because it did not promote the administration's policy accomplishments.
Following up on the Washington Post's revelation, Waxman said he has obtained a copy of the original report, which was written by former Surgeon General Richard Carmona, and a revised copy prepared by political appointee William Steiger. He said a comparison of the drafts reveals clear differences and demonstrates political manipulation in the report's preparation. Waxman has requested Leavitt provide all documents related to the report by Wednesday.
