After 38 years of continuous occupation, Britain is about to pull out of Northern Ireland.

The British army's operation in Northern Ireland will come to an end at midnight on Tuesday.

At the height of the Troubles, there were around 27,000 British soldiers in Northern Ireland. The army were sent there in 1969 after violent clashes between Catholics and Protestants but, at the time, it was thought the soldiers would only be there for a few weeks.

THis is just making it official. Besides, there will still be 5000 troops there, it's just they won't be assisting civilian authority. It's a bit like troops being stationed in Wales or Scotland
