I saw a "SUPPORT THE TROOPS" rally in Skowhegan, Maine this weekend.

Five people, maybe six. A couple of barely legible poster-board signs. No honking heard. Where were all the Bush supporters who want to support the troops by making them stay in Iraq forever?

6. Actually, we were sitting at some pub overlooking the dam at New Balance

Wicked cute servers, btw! I think they snagged every beautiful girl in Maine. Anyway, the "rally" was on the bridge over the dam, the main flow of traffic.

Right now, I'm not down on Maine. I had an awesome weekend of whitewater rafting, then stopped by Walker Point for afternoon tea...unfortunately, they wouldn't answer the door. But outside of the touristy Republican coastal crap, the wilderness up north -- we stayed north of Jackman, 12 miles from the border -- was some of the most beautiful country I've ever seen. It was a seven hour drive from our cabin to home, so a stop in Skowhegan for some Bloody Mary's was a welcome break.

7. A pub? In Skowhegan?

The place has gone upscale! Ten years ago when i was at colby, the only thing skowhegan was good for was cheap pizza and dive bars that didn't id.

8. Hey, it was surprisingly cool. Not the town...but the pub was!

We had to squeeze down an ally...the pub had a nice deck overlooking the dam. Good food and drinks. I won't go so far as to call the place all that, but it was one of those places that I wished were in my nearby hip college town or something. It really wasn't all that bad!

2. The rest of them were out at Kennebunkport

5. I went to Kennebunkport, too. Stopped at the compound.

W was at Camp David, so we were allowed to stop. I was absolutely dumbfounded at the stupidity of some of the people who were stopping to ogle Walker Point. One couple, 50's, very, very large, heavy Texas drawal, asked if we knew if W was home. We explained that it wasn't W's house, that is was his father's. She appeared very confused. "I thought this was the president's house?" It is, we explained...the first president Bush. Then you could see their big old dog walking down to the doc with some unrecognizable kid. The old brown and white retriever thing. "Oh, look, there's Barney!" she said.

Uh...no, we explained...Barney's just a little Scotty thing, not a big dog like that. She didn't know, despite the ol' Barney-cam and years of photos of Bush carrying him under his arm.

The SS appeared to be in the water checking out the famous Fidelity III speed/fishing boat of Poppy's -- three guys in full wet suits and scuba gear surrounding the boat. She wanted to know if we'd seen Hyannis, and whether Kennedy's compound was bigger. She sounded very disappointed when we told her it was. Total moran. I got some funny pics...I'll post 'em when I get a chance.
