12. One Of Many...
Damn...there goes another fond memory. Many a night we'd party late in our dorm room...we'd "bowl up" and watch Dick Cavett and Tom Snyder...great interviewers, great guests...a TV few today remember.

Snyder was a role model to many aspiring talk show people...the man's smooth and friendly style would ask a tough question with a smile. He engaged his guests...it wasn't just enough to know what the person was promoting, but to go into what inspired this promotion or some other revealing question that took the discussion to another level. It was a rare talent who could do that.

In the late 80's, he did a late night radio talk show and I had the chance to meet and have lunch with him. The man in person was as genuine...if not more, than what you saw or heeard. Here was a man who could have been either conceited or bitter, but not only was optimistic, but encouraged other to follow in his steps...and do better.

Reat in peace, my friend Tom...thank you for sharing so much of yourself with me and millions of others...

34. Thanks, KharmaTrain, that was good.
I believe more conversations stirred the mind in that setting than today.

Of course, today, I wonder if there ARE a bevy of dorms who bowl up and consider the higher ground over archives of Thom Hartman or Mike Malloy?

37. It's Jon Stewart & Colbert Now
My nearly 20 year old son gets a lot of his news from the show...and I don't mind one bit. Jon's interviews are some of the more enriching around and its made him a lot more aware of what's going on. He and his friends cite the Daily Show like I would quip Firesign Theater or George Carlin bits with my friends.

I admire the upcoming 18-30 year olds...many who we share electrons with on DU...who have come of age in dangerous times and are questioning authority. That I can very much relate with.

Cheers...

40. I have a better sense about these "yoots" now!
And I've got to tell you as one with a limited view on these youths, only having partially raised a step son, (now aged 38) my son's putting a lot of things together now as I once wondered if he even WOULD. There is that much difference in the 38 y.o. demographic than that 18-30 set.

But anyway, I'm more encouraged to keep the conversation here going.

Back at ya! :hi:

41. College dorm memories w Tom Snyder
Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 12:16 PM by OzarkDem
His shows were pretty cutting edge and controversial at the time, so he was always required watching. There wasn't much in those days before cable tv.

RIP Tom, thanks for great shows.

5. I remember Tom Snyder was the last of the great late night
... I think his show was called "Tomorrow" and had style and his interviews were not white-washed like Johhny Carson's, "Tonight Show".

John, Lennon, Ayn Rand, and a really high Johhny Rotten were some of his memorable late night interviews before the late night network went for Letterman and the marketing of goofball shit, versus substance.

6. This makes me sad.
I always liked his show. It was the first place I ever saw Weird Al and Jon Stewart. If I remember correctly, Jon was on his show a lot and even took over for him when he was gone. Anyone remember if that was the case in the mid eighties?

7. Easy to caricature, but he had some great moments
Snyder: How old are you in your world?

Manson: Um, Forever. Since breakfast...I can't remember.

Snyder: I don't know what that means, come on off the space shuttle Charles.

24. People today have no idea how real a person he was.
The Tomorrow Show was fantastic. The people he interviewed, the questions he asked, the fun they all had- it was far superior to anything going on today. Tom Snyder was one of the greats.

You will be missed, Tom. Rest in peace.

25. Sorry to hear this. Snyder represented something
entirely lost on tv today - the intelligent interview. It wasn't about inviting someone on to plug a movie or tv show. It was more like inviting a friend over and settling in for a lengthy no-holds barred discussion that veered toward all kinds of topics. Snyder took a genuine interest in his guests and it showed.

RIP

26. RIP Tom....
Tom Snyder was one of real people on TV back in the day. Back when NBC was still a real television broadcast network and cared about quality. He will be missed. I watched him introduce the "Not Ready For Primetime Players" with Gilda Radner, Jane Curtain, Bill Murray, and John Belushi on his Tomorrow Show a couple of nights before the debut of Saturday Night Live. He was truly one-of-a-kind. The "Good Kind."

And to send you off Tom, here are three of your jokes that you've told over the years that have become favorites of mine. Thanks for the laughs and your kindness....

•A guy goes into a dealership to buy a new car. As he's signing the papers, he says to the salesman, you know, "there aren't any buttons on the radio in this car, how am I supposed to get the stations I want?" The salesman says, "this is the most advanced radio of its kind ever. All you do is tell the radio what kind of music you want to listen to, and it will find the stations for you -- go ahead, try it." So the guy says, "classical music" and the most beautiful surround stereo sound of Beethoven's 5th symphony comes over the radio's speakers. Well the guy is driving the car home and he's checking out the different stations, so he says, "talk" and Rush Limbaugh comes on; "Rap" and a new song by L.L. Cool J comes on; "Soul" and Papa's Gotta A Brand New Bag is being sung by James Brown, just then a car pulls right in front of him and the guy hollers "idiot"!!, and Howard Stern comes on the radio.

•There once was a farmer with three daughters of whom he was very protective. One evening all three had dates. When the first gentleman arrived, the farmer asked, " what is your name and what do you have planned for the evening?" The gentleman replied, "hi, my name is Joe, I've come for Flo, we're going to see a show, can she go?" The farmer said yes that's fine, go and sit in the parlor, she'll be out shortly."

The next gentleman arrived, and the farmer asked, " what is your name and what do you have planned for the evening?" The gentleman replied, "hi, my name is Freddy, I've come for Betty, we're going to eat spaghetti, is she ready?" The farmer said she'll be ready shortly, go and sit in the parlor."

When the next gentleman arrived, the farmer asked, " what is your name and what do you have planned for the evening?" The gentleman replied, "hi, my name is Chuck, and the farmer shot him."

•A guy walks into a psychiatrist’s office wearing underwear made from Saran Wrap, and the psychiatrist says, " I can clearly see your nuts."

36. One of the Greats of Late-Night TV, Back When it was Great for Adults
Tom Snyder's "Tomorrow" show was one of the best talk shows ever on TV, really great during the 1970s, just like Dick Cavett and Phil Donahue. Topics were treated with depth and humor, and talked about like adults. Many, many great interviews, with John Lennon, Liv Ullmann, political topics, the first time I ever heard of Curtis Sliwa and the Guardian Angels, when they were still the Magnificent 13, on and on and on. That was one of the greats. I knew Snyder had been ill for some years now, and had often wondered what was happening. There were even great letters sent in from audience members, read on the air: one of the most memorable I ever heard, that I still remember, was from the adult son of the great (Cassavettes group) actor John Marley, thanking Snyder for knowing who Marley even was, after Snyder had praised the great actor. A great conversational program, almost every night. Snyder also always had great and respectful converstaions with feminists; always a huge plus. Rest In Peace.

47. Adios Tom. You were one of the good ones.
In an era before the internet and before cable TV, Tom's show was an slightly off-beat kind-of-hip alternative to banal late-night reruns and old movies.

And what a brilliant set for the wee hours; limbo lighting so the background was stark black. (This also probably reflected a small budget.) Bumpers showed the video switcher (also set up in a limbo set) and the director's voice mixed in.

Another icon of my past is gone. So sad.
