More than 2,360 suspects from 77 countries involved, authorities say

VIENNA, Austria -

Austrian authorities said Wednesday they have uncovered a major international child pornography ring involving more than 2,360 suspects from 77 countries, including hundreds in the United States, who paid to view videos of young children being sexually abused.

The children were under the age of 14 and screams could be heard, said Harald Gremel, an Austrian police expert on Internet crime who headed the investigation.

Interior Minister Guenther Platter said the FBI was investigating about 600 of the suspects in the United States. German authorities were following leads on another 400 people, France was looking into about 100 others, and at least 23 suspects were Austrians, he said.

Platter said videos downloaded from the Internet and seized by Austria’s Federal Criminal Investigations Bureau included images that showed “the worst kind of child sexual abuse.”

Gremel said “girls could be seen being raped, and you could also hear screams.” Although officials initially said the children ranged in ages from “0 to 14,” Gremel later said no infants were seen in the videos.

No Austrian suspects were yet in custody, authorities said, adding that they shared their information with law enforcement in other countries in hopes that suspects could be investigated and charged. Gremel said he could not provide details about investigations outside Austria, but noted that cooperation with Russian authorities had intensified over the past two weeks.

19. I'm sure it's a multifactorial phenomenon not reducible to a function of biological "race"...

Of course, I do not believe that there is a White Pedo Gene, any more than there is a Black Crack Dealer Gene.

But I do think that pointing out the disproportionate whiteness of the kiddie porn people can help to complicate matters for those who are inclined to post invidious comparisons of whites and white social behavior (always normalized, or even idealized) and others (usually black, and always pathologized or even vilified).

If all those drug raids, pat downs, Driving-While-Black traffic stops, and the like were netting child porn, it would go in the books with the other indictments. But the police aren't finding such things in those kinds of situations. Which strongly suggests -- I think -- that the apparent difference in the prevalence of pedophilia between the black and white populations isn't just apparent: it's real.

For instance, Germany contributed about 400 suspects -- which is proportionally more than the 600 from the United States.

Of course, the creation of such images involves the filming of the sexual abuse of real live children, and some of these people must have done such things. But most of the 2,360 current suspects appear to have downloaded, viewed, and traded the illegal images (it's apparently not yet known what percentage of the suspects were involved in the actual production of these materials).


I'm sure it will all come to light. Combatting child pornography is a priority for our government, and for many other governments.

I'll grant you 600 in the US is way too many and you can bet your socks it's a lot more than that in reality. But THIS article says

600 in the US - out of 300 million people.

400 in Germany - out of 85 million people.
