Ever hear of the War Guilt Information Programme in Japan?

<snip>Following Japan’s military defeat, the US-led Allied Forces pressed home this result by pursuing the battle into a wide range of other fields, including culture, mentality, education, thought, and religion, with the result that Japan was thoroughly vanquished not only physically but also metaphysically. Under the US military occupation, which lasted more than seven years, the cunning and sustained War Guilt Information Program conducted by General Headquarters caused many Japanese to fall into the trap of a masochistic view of history. Even today, nearly 60 years on, the nation has still not managed to overcome this view.

The most damaging consequence of the Japanese people’s mental and psychological fragility was that when Japan regained its sovereignty on April 28, 1952, the nation was reluctant to abrogate a constitution that had been forced upon it while its people were under military occupation―in violation of the laws of war. The fact that even today the Japanese people believe that adherence to this constitution is the right thing to do, and perceive things in this context, is the biggest problem for Japan’s national defense.
