Romney: YouTube had 29,000 sex offenders on their web site
Edited on Sun Jul-29-07 02:00 AM by cynatnite
But Romney showed some unfamiliarity with the Internet when he discussed the problem of sexual predators and children.

"YouTube is a website that allows kids to network with one another and make friends and contact each other," Romney explained. "YouTube looked to see if they had any convicted sex offenders on their web site. They had 29,000."

When he isn't campaigning? Sheesh! I don't know whether to laugh or be disgusted.

I hope YouTube breaks his balls.

6. Any pol that doesn't know the difference between
YouTube and My Space is out of touch and living in that proverbial bubble. What this country does not need is another ignoramous sitting in the drivers seat.

8. I don't know if I'd go there.

YouTube and MySpace are basically worthless in the day to day lives of millions of people.

They're both entertainment sources, and in YouTube's case are only now starting to be extended into a more visible status.

A politician that doesn't know what the internet is? Scary.
A politician that doesn't know about the popular sites? Big whoop.

Romney has plenty of his own problems. This isn't on the top thousand.

The actual facts are irrelevant. String some words together that will have the intended impact, then forget you ever said them and move on.

exhibits a personality characteristic I am, shall we say, really sick of seeing in the person purporting to be the POTUS.

11. Fire and forget.

Make the angry statement, get on record faster than your opponents, apologize later if it turned out to be wrong.

I misspoke...

Where have I heard THAT one before?

misspoke somehow suggests it was ok. "I was bleating nonsense thinking no-one would catch me" would be more accurate

12. Myspace maybe, but I think YouTube is great.
So many historical videos on that site. It's definitely not worthless...it just depends on what you search for (I mean you could essentially say the same about the internet, too).

13. I love YouTube.

It has BECOME a useful source for archival videos and such. It certainly wasn't started as one. And if the original owners of the source materials had their way, none of it would be there since it's all basically pirated.

That said, probably 50%+ of the US population has never, and will never see that website. My grandparents never have. A lot of areas in the US still are on dial-up or worse for internet access, so video is just painful and out of reach for many.

31. Your stats are wrong
Edited on Sun Jul-29-07 09:02 AM by blogslut
According to the latest 2007 stats from InternetWorldStats.com (who get their data from Nielsen/Net Ratings and the International Telecommunication Union) - 69.7% of Americans use the Internet. In addition, PEW stated in March 2006 that 42% of Americans use the Internet via broadband connection.

link: http://www.internetworldstats.com/top20.htm
http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/184/report_display.asp

In other words, it's safe to say that a majority of the American population knows more about the web than Mittens.

Another fine example of Romney's ignorance is this claim from the same article:

"Romney earlier in the day said he would encourage computer manufacturers to install internet filtering software on computers sold at retail to help parents protect their children from pornography."

If Romney had merely done some research he would find that most computer retailers sell machines with OS software pre-installed. As you can guess, that software is most often Windows - which is bundled with Internet Explorer - which contains filtering software within its browser settings. Not to mention the many access providers that also provide filtering software with their services.

His lack of knowledge of the sites doesn't disqualify him as a candidate for me.

The other 15 or 20 thousand things that he's wrong on are enough for me.

but I don't think it may have been just an accident...

Actually, YouTube is the popular site that allows Internet users to upload and watch a variety of videos. The web site, which is owned by search-engine behemoth Google, also was a co-sponsor of the Democratic presidential debate held on Monday night.

The web site MySpace is the one to which Romney actually was referring. MySpace, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., said this week it had found 29,000 registered sex offenders who had submitted profiles to its site and removed them.

I suspect Romney wanted to drape himself in "values", but did not want to sully Murdoch/FAUX....

toss in the reports about the republic candidates declining or considering declining participation in YOUTUBE debate - it gives them the (mis)-excuse of not wanting to support groups which promote sex offenders...

if confronted about this error -- they'll blame it on mis-speak, an honest mistake... kinda like when bush/cheney/snowjob "misspeak"...
