1. See, now I would feel like a cheat if I sign up and they count my bulbs
I've been using CFLs in every light fixture ever since they first came out about a dozen years or so ago. So my usage is not a change to the current environment.

But it is good to see that DUers have saved so much energy usage.

2. I'd probably feel like half a cheat...
It's the recent bulb discussions here at DU that have got me
finally using ALL CFLs, instead of just in the most-used fixtures.

But whatever small credit is due for that certainly
belongs to DU.

3. I also have been using them where possible
for a number of years. Is it fair to sign up?

9. i don't see why you couldn't sign up. it asks you the date you changed
to a cfl--do you remember what year? and what season? or you could put down that you started using them on a date you're certain you were using them by.

it will tally up your savings to date, and all the other benefits from these lights.

4. I just picked up a whole load of CF bulbs the other day. I'm trying to get changed over completely,
but some of our bulbs are EXPENSIVE! $12.00 for large CF flood light bulbs that are DIMMABLE. I finally found them at Lowes and picked up 6 of them. I need 10 of them for our basement recessed lights. I also picked up 60 watters and got 3 lamps changed over. I finally found some small CF tube bulbs I needed and replaced the old ones.

I still have a ton of bulbs that need to be changed over, but it's just going to have to happen a little at a time. I'm having a hard time finding a replacement for 40 watt bulbs and small CF floods. I'm going to go back to onebillionbulbs and see if they have them and maybe order them next month. I DID find 3-way CF bulbs at Lowes, but they were out of stock. Every time I look for these bulbs, they have more and more choices. That's a GOOD THING!

6. You should have seen the stinkers they came out with
back in the early nineties. Only two choices and both were huge in size. You couldn't fit it in most lamps. The light it gave off was that irritating florescent light. Ha!

After using the bulbs for so many years, you get so use to the fact that the bulbs don't wear out very often. So when one does go out, it startles you.

I've been waiting for these babies to come out - I can change 8 bulbs if I can find floods that are dimmable!

:woohoo:

On Edit: What size is large? I need to replace PAR30 bulbs, 75W 130V...

13. They are GE bulbs, 15w that replaces a 65w incandescent bulb and I found them at Lowes.
You can always use less wattage in bulbs, just not MORE wattage than the fixture accepts. :hi:

These are the larger floods. We also have small recessed lights that are halogen 50w floods and those are 3 inches in diameter & 3 inches long? very small bulbs. These 65 watters are the larger 5 (?) 0r 6 (?) inch flood bulbs.

Here's a link to Ace Hardware. They sell them online, but are more expensive than Lowes by $1.79.:(

If you have a Lowes nearby, it may be worth the trip or maybe you can find them online for cheaper elsewhere?

14. My "instant on" question:
I switched all the fixtures I could to CFL's starting 16 years ago.

At first, only very large recessed ceiling fixtures could hold the huge things!

And they were so very icky greenish in color.......

But now, they are the size of normal bulbs and someone has really worked on the color!

BUT...... all during the past 16 years, occasionally, I could find "instant on" CFL's.
They come on immediately at (nearly) full brightness. This is a VITAL improvement and one I first saw about 12 years ago. But I only see "instant on" bulbs very, very rarely.

Why hasn't this improvement become the universal standard???? My gosh, IKEA bulbs are so slow to start and brighten that you are down the stairs, head first, with a broken leg before they even come on!

What's the problem? Is there some drawback to "instant on" bulbs? Do they trickle electricity to stay ready (that's my guess)?

Anybody know?
