7. Could Pelosi just say no?
Then she could give her SOTU speech. No doubt it would be more honest than *'s speech will be.

4. I'm not going to go off on a rant...
I'm just going to quietly mention that the word "lady" is hopelessly outdated and woman would be a much better alternative.

Velma - who is still annoyed about the Lady Raiders and the Lady Longhorns and the International Skating Union still referring to female skaters (both figure skaters AND speed skaters) as "ladies". *sigh*

8. She fits my dictionary's definition of "lady"
"of refined family background and upbringing" "a woman who behaves very politely and with dignity"

That is Nancy Pelosi in my estimation.

9. Like I said...I'm not going to rant today
but "lady" has a lot of baggage that comes with it. Baggage that just doesn't exist for "gentleman".

10. My head spins at what to say and what not to say...
Edited on Tue Jan-23-07 03:10 PM by trumad
Hell, I don't even think you ladies women know what to say...

<snip>

Non-sexist language guidelines forbid its use to refer attributively to the sex of a working person, as in lady lawyer and lady doctor. Many find these to have a condescending nuance not shared by female lawyer or woman doctor ; compare poetess for a similar problem.

Some advocates of non-sexist language recommend not using the word at all, whereas others permit its parallel use in the same circumstances in which a man would be called a gentleman or lord (for example, titling washrooms Men and Ladies would be considered sexist, but using either Men and Women or Ladies and Gentlemen would be acceptable; as is landlady as the parallel of landlord.)

In the United States, notably among younger feminists of the 1990s and 00s influenced by riot grrl, "lady" has occasionally been reclaimed in a more ironic fashion. For example, Miranda July's Joanie 4 Jackie chain letter videotape project is said to consist of "lady-made movies," a feminist music and video distributor in North Carolina called itself Mr. Lady Records, and chorus of Le Tigre's song "LT Tour Theme" from the album Feminist Sweepstakes (2000) declares itself to be written "for the ladies and the fags."

I am a sports nut so much of my irritation over the word comes from it's continued use in that context. There's something fundamentally wrong with referring to womens' sports teams as "Lady" Whatevers. And the figure skating thing makes me absolutely INSANE in the context of a sport where it was only a couple of years ago that they stopped requiring female participants to wear a skirt and allowed them to wear trousers when they compete.

16. now you'e got me curious
why you chose lady over woman.

I'm actually becoming a fan of a word I've only ever really heard used in the Congress...gentlewoman, as in, "my colleague, the gentlewoman from New York...".

19. I thought it would be more proper.
A lady to me is class, style and grace. I'm old school so it's the way I was brought up...

BTW: Nancy has class, style and grace and in my mind is quite a Lady.

22. I suppose I care less about her class, style, or grace...
and more about her power and ability to get things done. No one has ever really cared whether the men who have been Speaker had style or grace. :) Although, maybe we wouldn't have had some of the real stinkers we've had in that job if we did.

5. Yes, looking over the shoulder of "The Decider".
I bet that'll keep the smirks to a minimum.

It would nice if Speaker Pelosi would bring the Plamegate Committee Assigments folder and set it on the desk where Darth Cheney could see it.

Just savoring the moment. :)

Somewhere in D.C. right now there's a man (the U.S. House Sergeant at Arms) practicing very hard to make sure he doesn't stumble over his words tonight when he announces for the very first time, "Madame Speaker, the President of the United States!"

Listen closely tonight; see if he starts saying "Mister..."

20. Kinda cool!
I say it's freakin Fantastic! Unfreakinbelievably phenomenal! She stands up there with the spirits of every suffragette and activist that came before her. This is a day that all women should celebrate regardless of party.

I've long said that any civil rights movement is just an equation.

Mass Consciousness change + time = progress.

The time has Come! :patriot:
