Why Does the Bush Administration Hate the Gulf Coast??
White House Priorities: Hating the Gulf Coast

Since it's the second-biggest stain on their horrific record, their contempt for the Gulf Coast gets stronger and stronger every week.

This one's a doozy: FEMA wants back the money they carelessly threw at the Katrina aftermath - a direct result of the fed's uneducated and negligent bookkeeping.

If the feds get the money they're looking for, then we demand that Halliburton, Bechtel, KBR, the Berger Group, CAI, and every other Iraq reconstruction contractor return the billions of no-bid dollars they grabbed to not do a goddamn thing - in the White House's first-biggest stain.

You in?

FEMA wants millions in hurricane aid returned

In the neighborhood President Bush visited right after Hurricane Katrina, the U.S. government gave $84.5 million to more than 10,000 households. But Census figures show fewer than 8,000 homes existed there at the time.

Now the government wants back a lot of the money it disbursed across the region.

The Federal Emergency Management Administration has determined nearly 70,000 Louisiana households improperly received $309.1 million in grants, and officials acknowledge those numbers are likely to grow.

In the chaotic period after two deadly hurricanes, Katrina and Rita, slammed the Gulf Coast in 2005 — Katrina making landfall in late August, followed by Rita in late September — federal officials scrambled to provide help in hard-hit areas such as submerged neighborhoods near the French Quarter.

But an Associated Press analysis of government data obtained under the federal Freedom of Information Act suggests the government might not have been careful enough with its checkbook as it gave out nearly $5.3 billion in aid to storm victims. The analysis found the government regularly gave money to more homes in some neighborhoods than the number of homes that actually existed.

1. It's not hating, it's not caring. The goal is to reorder America
into the "ownership society" where everything has to be filtered through private hands. They just don't have a conscience when it comes to their ideology including not really caring if someone suffers in the process of this re-ordering.

4. I respectfully disagree
The weekend after Katrina I was in a mall in California where a couple of photographers were taking pictures and donating all of the money to Katrina victims. I donated without having my picture taken. Our local grocery store had a can at the check-out counter for Katrina victims. It was full. So, ordinary people did care and did contribute. This administration behaved the way it always does--incompetently and greedily.
