Since We're Headed for a Depression, let's remember songs from the past
I'll start:

Song: Hand Me Down That Can O' Beans Lyrics
Well hand me down that can o' beans
Hand me down that can o' beans
Hand me down that can o' beans
I'm throwing it away

Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
I had a lucky day

Mary, my Mary, my sweet young Mary
We're going out this evening
Mary, my Mary
I'm gonna take you out tonight

So hand me down that can o' beans
Hand me down that can o' beans
Hand me down that can o' beans
I'm throwing it away

Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
Go the beans, go the beans
Good times are here to stay

Hand me down my can o' beans
Hand me down my can o' beans
Hand me down my can o' beans
I'm thowin' it away

Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
I had a lucky day

Mary, M-M-M-Mary
My cute young Mary
We're goin' out this evening
Mary, M-M-M-Mary
I'm gonna take you out tonight

So, hand me down that can o' beans
Hand me down that can o' beans
Hand me down that can o' beans
I'm throwin' it away

Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
Go the beans, go the beans
Good times are here to stay
Yeah!

Hand me down that can o' beans
Hand me down that can o' beans
Hand me down that can o' beans
I'm throwing it away

Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
I had a lucky day

Mary, M-M-M-Mary
My sweet young Mary
We're goin' out this evening
Mary, M-M-M-Mary
I'm gonna take you out tonight

So, hand me down that can o' beans
Hand me down that can o' beans
Hand me down that can o' beans
I'm throwin' it away

Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
Out the winder go the beans
Go the beans, go the beans
Good times are here to stay!

Song: Paint Your Wagon (I'm On My Way) Lyrics
Gold
Gold
Gold
Gold
Gold
Gold!
Gold!!

Gotta dream boy
Gotta song
Paint your wagon
And come along

Where am I goin'?
I don't know
Where am I headin'?
I ain't certain
All I know
Is I am on my way

When will I be there?
I don't know
When will I get there?
I ain't certain
All that I know
Is I am on my way

Gotta dream boy
Gotta song
Paint your wagon

Gotta dream boy
Gotta song
Paint your wagon
And come along

Where am I goin'?
I don't know
When will I be there?
I ain't certain
What will I get?
I ain't equipped to say

But who gives a damn?
Who gives a damn?
Who gives a damn?
We're on our way

Where am I goin'?
I don't know
Where am I headin'?
I ain't certain
All that I know
Is I am on my way

When will I be there?
I don't know
When will I get there?
I ain't certain
All that I know
Is I am on my way

-Instrumental-

When am I goin'?
I don't know
Where am I headin'?
I ain't certain
All that I know
Is I am on my way

When will I be there?
I don't know
When will I get there?
I ain't certain
All that I know
Is I am on my way

Gotta dream boy
Gotta song
Paint your wagon
And come along

Where are we goin'?
I don't know
When will we be there?
I ain't certain
What will we get?
I ain't equipped to say
But who gives a damn?
Who gives a damn?
We're on our way!

6. yes, I can
"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime," lyrics by Yip Harburg, music by Jay Gorney (1931)

They used to tell me I was building a dream, and so I followed the mob,
When there was earth to plow, or guns to bear, I was always there right on the job.
They used to tell me I was building a dream, with peace and glory ahead,
Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?

Once I built a railroad, I made it run, made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad; now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once I built a tower, up to the sun, brick, and rivet, and lime;
Once I built a tower, now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,
Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,
And I was the kid with the drum!

Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.
Why don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,
Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,
And I was the kid with the drum!

Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.
Say, don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?

4. Big Rock Candy Mountain

Big Rock Candy Mountain

One evening as the sun went down and the jungle fire was burning
Down the track came a hobo hiking and he said boys I'm not turning
I'm headin for a land that's far away beside the crystal fountains
So come with me we'll go and see the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains there's a land that's fair and bright
Where the handouts grow on bushes and you sleep out every night
Where the boxcars are all empty and the sun shines every day
On the birds and the bees and the cigarette trees
Where the lemonade springs where the bluebird sings
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains all the cops have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth and the hens lay soft boiled eggs
The farmer's trees are full of fruit and the barns are full of hay
Oh, I'm bound to go where there ain't no snow
Where the rain don't fall and the wind don't blow
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains you never change your socks
And the little streams of alcohol come a-trickling down the rocks
The brakemen have to tip their hats and the railroad bulls are blind
There's a lake of stew and of whiskey too
You can paddle all around 'em in a big canoe
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains the jails are made of tin
And you can walk right out again as soon as you are in
There ain't no short handled shovels, no axes saws or picks
I'm a goin to stay where you sleep all day
Where they hung the jerk that invented work
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

I'll see you all this coming fall in the Big Rock Candy Mountains

12. It is a great old hobo song.
Here is a site where you can listen to it. The melody is a bit different than the one I know but you get the idea. Enjoy it. I remember it from my childhood, someone used to sing it to me.

11. The lyrics have been cleaned up a bit
Before recording the song, McClintock cleaned it up considerably from the version he sang as a street busker in 1897. Originally the song described a child being recruited into hobo life by tales of the "big rock candy mountain". Such recruitment actually occurred, with hobos enchanting children with tales of adventure called ghost stories by other hobos. In proof of his authorship of the song, McClintock published the original words, the last verse of which was:

The punk rolled up his big blue eyes
And said to the jocker, "Sandy,
I've hiked and hiked and wandered too,
But I ain't seen any candy.
I've hiked and hiked till my feet are sore
And I'll be damned if I hike any more
To be buggered sore like a hobo's whore
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

I can't really see Burl Ives singing that verse

7. ok
words and music by Woody Guthrie

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

Chorus

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

9. Life is just a bowl of cherries
"Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries," lyrics by Lew Brown, music by Ray Henderson (1931)

People are queer, they're always crowing, scrambling and rushing about;
Why don't they stop someday, address themselves this way?
Why are we here? Where are we going? It's time that we found out.
We're not here to stay; we're on a short holiday.

Life is just a bowl of cherries.
Don't take it serious; it's too mysterious.
You work, you save, you worry so,
But you can't take your dough when you go, go, go.

So keep repeating it's the berries,
The strongest oak must fall,

The sweet things in life, to you were just loaned
So how can you lose what you've never owned?

Life is just a bowl of cherries,
So live and laugh at it all.

Life is just a bowl of cherries.
Don't take it serious; it's too mysterious.
At eight each morning I have got a date,
To take my plunge 'round the Empire State.
You'll admit it's not the berries,
In a building that's so tall;

There's a guy in the show, the girls love to kiss;
Get thousands a week just for crooning like this:

Life is just a bowl of . . . aw, nuts!
So live and laugh at it all!

10. Beans and Cornbread had a fight
Beans and Cornbread had a fight
Beans knocked Cornbread outta sight
Cornbread said "Now that’s alright, meet me on the corner tomorrow night"
I'll be ready, I'll be ready tomorrow night
I'll be ready, I'll be ready tomorrow night
I'll be ready, I'll be ready tomorrow night

That’s what Beans said to Cornbread "I'll be ready tomorrow night"
Beans told Cornbread you ain’t straight
You better wake up or I'll gash your gate
Been in this pot since half past two
Swelling and puffing and almost due
I'll be ready tomorrow night, that’s what Beans said to Cornbread
You always getting mad at me, I ain’t mad at you
I'll be ready tomorrow night, I'll be ready, Mmmmmm

Beans grabbed cornbread by the toe
Beans said "Cornbread let me go"
Cornbread said "I'll lay you low, I’m gonna fight you, you so and so"
Meet me on the corner, met me on the corner tomorrow night
That’s what Beans said to Cornbread , you so bad, you always wanna fight

Meet me on the corner tomorrow night and I’m gonna beat the hell out of ya
Oooohhhhh (meet) on the corner tomorrow night
Beans hit Cornbread on the head, Cornbread said I’m almost dead
Beans told Cornbread (NOW?) get up man, you know that we go hand in hand

Beans told ???
That’s what Beans said to Cornbread, We should stick together hand in hand
We should get up every morning and hang out together like sister and brothers
Every Saturday night we should hang out like chitterlings and potatoes salad

Like shrawberries and shortcakes, YEAH
Like cornbeef and cabbage, YEAH
Like liver and onions, YEAH
Like red beans and rice, YEAH
Like ,YEAH
Like soft cream and v?, YEAH
Like bread and butter, YEAH
Like pot cakes and m
Beans told cornbread, it makes no difference what you think about me,
but it makes a whole lot of differences what I think about you, we
should hang out like together like pot cakes and M
That’s what Beans said to Cornbread

14. Maybe we can sing this one White House Blues
Look here, Mr. Hoover, it's see what you done;
You went off a-fishin', let the country go to ruin.
Now he's gone, I'm glad he's gone.

Roosevelt's in the White House, doin' his best,
While old Hoover is layin' 'round and takin' his rest.
Now he's gone, I'm glad he's gone.

Pants all busted, patches all way down,
People got so ragged they couldn't go to town.
Now he's gone, I'm glad he's gone.

Workin' in the coal mines, twenty cents a ton,
Fourteen long hours and your work day is done.
Now he's gone, I'm glad he's gone.

People all angry, they all got the blues,
Wearing patched britches and old tennis shoes.
Now he's gone, I'm glad he's gone.

Got up this morning, all I could see
Was corn bread and gravy just a-waitin' for me.
And now he's gone, I'm glad he's gone.

Look here, Mr. Hoover, it's see what you done;
You went off a-fishin', let the country go to ruin.
Now he's gone, I'm glad he's gone.

15. WTF?
Yeah, that's real hopeful. I can't even fucking believe some people in this world anymore. What the hell, it sounds like we're all waiting for a fucking Great Depression! That's because most of us probably didn't live through it or don't remember what it was like. Wake the fuck up, this is not something to be awaiting or cheering on.
