A strange statement overheard at the grocery store earlier today
It has been brutally cold around here forever (ok, about three weeks or so), and everybody is getting sick and tired of it and bitching about it. Today, I was at the grocery store and the checkout lady was trying to make small talk with a customer. Nothing wrong with that, they were talking about the awful weather, as is everyone else. But then the customer said something like "This is punishment to us for being so godless". The checkout lady and the kid who was bagging just shut up and went about their work and a few of us in the line were just looking at each other. The guy ahead of me muttered something about "friggin' nutty broad", which I think we all felt. I wonder if, when it warms up, that woman will say that it's a gift from God because we are all being more holy or something? My somewhat scientific opinion is that we haven't really seen cold like this in about six years, so we are due. But I still wish it would go away.

1. Maybe God is punishing her and everyone else is just suffering because of her?
 Makes about as much sense!

8. You know, I never thought about that.
Maybe Braley's former opponent has a direct connection to heaven or something. And I'm out here all the time, usually posting drivel or arguing. lol. Glad to see you out and about as well Debi. Rumor has it that it may be 30 degrees on Monday. Sounds like time to break out the grill to me.

3. I have a friend, someone I used to work with, who told me that
9/11 was punishment from God because we are so sinful. She's the sweetest, funniest person you'd ever be happy to know, and I couldn't believe such crap could come out of her mouth.

I just don't understand that mindset at all.

4. If cleanliness is next to godliness....
....then is godlessness next to hypothermia?

Sheesh, what a moran.....

16. Well, based on the OT....
....he has shown that he possesses a proficiency in the different methods used in killing off his creations. But he mostly seems to contract out his "hits," to his followers.

Yet apparently no matter how he dispatches you, if you're not up to singing his praises for eternity, then you'll end up getting burnt in the end. Forever. I guess it must be terribly embarrassing for your creations to show you up. So much for that "free will" idea....

6. I catch snippets of conversations like that from time to time
at work, and have come to the conclusion that anything can be construed as having biblical significance or some kind of idiotic sign of god.

7. So, temperature is directly proportional to godliness?
Is that Fahrenheit or Celsius?

9. I imagine that this summer
when it is around 95 degrees with humidity to match, the woman will still think that it is "punishment from god". In my experiences, these people are so far into some type of religious frenzy, they can't be talked to about anything else.

13. if she said that in seattle people would have jumped down her throat
maybe, its pretty scandinavian & introverted. the whole city is godless, even the churchgoers.

but its never very cold here wo no one would say 29 degrees was god's punishment.

15. Read my post below that.. it happened in Gig Harbor.
Close to Seattle.. but just far enough, apparently. My friend who used to work at the QFC in Gig Harbor said people were constantly trying to give her bibles... I'm thinking Godless Seattle sounds pretty nice.

Oh, and the introverted nature of the Seattle area was a mystery to me, but I'm starting to figure that out.

14. A grocery clerk the other day said the weather HERE was prophesy.
and it signals the end of the world! She said forget global warming, it's all in the bible. The guy in front of me was buying a paper with some storm photos from a few weeks ago on it.

I just said to her.. 'it's called global warming'. And left.
