A conversation with my wife (re: Bush declaring martial law)
My wife and I picked up her nephew and his friend, who are being shipped out to Iraq in the next several weeks. We planned on taking them with us to a local water park.

On the way to pick them up from base, I mentioned to my wife that a lot of people were begining to suspect Bush would declare martial law and suspend the next elections.

Her response? "I know."

Now, you have to understand that I'M the political one in the family. She generally agrees with my stances on things, but she leaves the exploration of the political realm to me. Her reply took me aback.

So I asked her, "where did YOU hear that?"

"At work," she replied. Apparently it's a fairly common topic lately where she works. This is significant. It's not the kind of place you'd expect that sort of talk. Not out in the open anyway.

Now, this doesn't mean I think it's more likely. In fact, I think that it would be even more dangerous for them than I thought it would be. Average, NON-political people are considering the possibility. And I seriously doubt they're cheering the notion.

Buckle up, folks. It's going to be a wild ride. One way or another.

1. If you are unwilling to consider the possibility, you will be
unable to prevent it. Surely there were many "conspiracy nuts" in Nazi Germany who made wild claims about a totalitarian government setting itself up. Were they marginalized to the point of ridicule for seeing what should have been so obvious to everybody?. If the last seven years don't tell us that nothing is impossible, we may be doomed to forfeiting our democracy.

3. I have covered this a dozen times already...
I think it's highly unlikely for several different reasons.

And how, precisely, do you suggest preparing for something like this?

4. I think that many of our opportunities to prepare for this have
already been lost . Totalitarianism is a poison best administered in small doses and we have swallowed them willingly. The Patriot Act, signing statements, the Military Commissions Act and the Executive Order of July 17, 2007. I think the fact that ordinary Americans are making this subject part of their daily discourse may be the best way of checking the steady erosion of our constitutional rights.

5. Yeah, I think you're right about that too...
And many of us DIDN'T swallow them readily.

Not to mention, this started a LONG time before the War On Terror. They started shoving this poison down our throats during the War On Drugs and people just lapped it up.

13. There was an attempted "war on environmentalists", also.
... Desperately seeking something to replace the "Cold War". Big money, ya know.

6. the best way to prevent any further erosion...
...is to shine the light on it right now and assign blame in advance.

In other words, Democrats in leadership ought to be saying things like:

"There's a lot of talk among people in the heartland about the possibility that elections will be cancelled and martial law declared due to some "emergency" next in the next 18 months. I am here to tell you that the American people are too wise now to be stampeded into giving up their Constitutional rights so that more power is taken from them. The people reject fear-mongering, they reject lies, and they reject tyranny."

9. Democratic leaders need to do what you're saying, and take ownership
of the conversation going on about martial law.

10. it seems so simple
Dems just need to put them on notice right now.

There would be a lot of hissing and spitting and Tucker Carlson would try to trap Dems into look crazy.

But it would work.

At first, I guess. Later, many were simply liquidated, especially "card-carrying" (real) "socialists" (ed. and "anarchists").

7. Perhaps the French will save us from Tyranny once again....

This detail of a painting of the commanders at Yorktown was done in the mid-1830's by Louis-Charles-Auguste Couder . A follower of the romantic school, Couder studied life portraits of the principals for this work. In the center, gesturing, is Rochambeau, with La Fayette visible behind Washington's left shoulder. Mounted in the background is the Duc (Duke) de Lauzun. For more Revolutionary War art, visit our Art Gallery.
