2. dang -- too late to revise the poll now
I should have put "Their chocolate sucks, and contributes to the low standards and poor taste of Americans" right below the health option...

Well, at least this poll is open to write-in candidates.

3. Chocolate is loaded with anti-oxidants
Edited on Tue Feb-06-07 03:36 PM by Juniperx
And Snickers, with its chocolate AND peanuts is actually a healthy choice for a sweet tooth snack. It hits the glycemic index right in the middle, where all good foods should.

Don't fuck with my chocolate!!!

Edited to say: I don't think that commercial was anti-gay at all!! Those two testosterone laden idiots looked like total jerks! I think it said volumes about how stupid being anti-gay is!

Sort of like the numb nuts who were all anti-Black Sabbath because they "thought" Sabbath were demonic...or at the very least worshipers of Satan. When in reality, they spoke out against having dealings with the Devil.

Perspective is everything. Those guys looked dumb as hell=being anti-gay is dumb as hell.

4. But is Mars(tm) Chocolate(r) loaded with chocolate?
that's more what the other post was getting at -- there's some very nice chocolate out there, but it's not inside the Snickers wrapper, and while I'm sort of aiming for tongue-in-cheek here, it's a valid complaint. If you've ever had unsweetened chocolate, you know right up front that the "healthy chocolate" is a different beast altoghether from what goes in your average candy bar.

6. The first ingredient is milk chocolate, which is mostly cocoa
That's where all the goods are. It doesn't have less cocoa, just more sugar than the unsweetened variety. If you want to eat candy off the shelf, you should look for cocoa content. Snickers is actually quite good. The "melt" factor is what I look for. The more wax put in to stretch the cocoa, the longer it takes to melt on your tongue, or fingers.

I'm a fiend for bittersweet...

27. My main complaint with Mars
Edited on Tue Feb-06-07 04:20 PM by GoneOffShore
is they're use of High Fructose Corn Syrup replacing sugar - And yes I know the arguments about how there is no real difference - except that HFCS is an engineered product. I urge you to look at Michael Pollans article in the Sunday NYT magazine about food. Lede on the article - "Eat food. Not too much. Plants mostly." Also his advice at the end - Don't eat anything that your great-great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.

Mars has become a chemical plant, not a candy kitchen. (Rant off)

30. The introduction of HFCS coincides with the rise in obesity
I'm all over the HFCS deal!

Look at the ingredients for Snickers... no HFCS there. Corn syrup, yes, but it IS a natural food. It's the HFCS derived using manufactured enzymes that is the killer.

Snickers ingredients list (U.S. version): milk chocolate (sugar, cocoa butter, chocolate, lactose, skim milk, milkfat, soy lecithin, artificial flavor), peanuts, corn syrup, sugar, skim milk, butter, milkfat, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, lactose, salt, egg whites, artificial flavor.

31. I still don't like Mars' chocolate
To my taste it's insipid.

Mais, chacun a son gout.

Used to like Snickers until I tasted 85% cocoa Valrhona and Bernard Castelain.

5. Thank you for attempting to minimize the senstivity of gays who were offended.
Especially the 'wake me up when we're talking about Iraq" thing. Classic touch.

You only thanked me for minimizing the sensitivity of offended gays, when the poll is clearly an attempt to minimize the sensitivity of everyone.

10. Nope. The controversy started with the 'gay' ad. That's not a good enough reason for you.
Now we have to have a poll to see the BEST reason to boycott. thanks a bunch.

15. The poll doesn't ask what constitutes a "good enough" reason, didn't you read it?
"We" don't "have to have" anything, but I posted the poll anyway. If you find the content to be inappropriate or outright offensive in its own right, please don't hesitate to hit the "Alert" and request it be removed from the forums.

13. And don't forget Judy Shepard.
"I am outraged that Mars, the NFL and these players would promote such an anti-gay message. This campaign encourages the same type of hate that led to the death of my son Matthew. It essentially gives 'permission' to our society to verbally or physically harass individuals who are gay, lesbian or bisexual," said Judy Shepard, Executive Director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation. "In particular, I am dismayed that these players, who are role models to our young people, would participate in perpetuating such discrimination and prejudice."

21. No human being is always right
And those orgs are made up of human beings. I don't always agree with the ACLU either. Just because some organization gets their panties in a bunch doesn't mean they are correct. I think it's a knee-jerk reaction to something.

I still say the ad looked anti-anti-gay to me.

26. LOL!
Yep.

I still think it's better to point to the fact that those hetero jerks looked really stupid than to get all up in arms about it. Better to flip the stupidity back than to start something that will only unite "hetero jerks".

Besides, we all know it only bothers them because they aren't secure with their own sexuality.

28. You're just never going to stop with this are you?
Edited on Tue Feb-06-07 04:37 PM by JackRiddler
You were the most offended person, ergo everyone else must shut up. Only you and your chosen organization have authority to speak, or to interpret the meaning of the Snickers ad, because you are oppressed and that should suffice.

Anyone who says anything different, or who interprets the ad differently, is being insensitive. Such persons act out of homophobia, which is equivalent to heterosexuality, which is equivalent to watching the Super Bowl, which is equivalent to being a Freeper. (I've seen all these analogies made by people arguing your point, albeit not all from you).

Anyone who says they're gay and think differently from you is either lying, or the victim of intimidation, or the victim of brainwashing and self-hatred.

I should shut up, actually. You did something good, which is to dig up the stuff on Mars and child labor. Hadn't known that before and Mars is a thoroughly boycott-worthy organization. I would boycott it, except that I buy none of their lousy oily sugar-laden junk.

But you know what I'm craving for right now? And I haven't had one years and years, but still remember perfectly, for every nougaty nutty chocolatey bite? I can tell you it's something I wouldn't be thinking about, if not for all these Snickers threads! You know that the whole point of these ads is just to keep the product in mind, whether the associations are bad or good?

Remember kids: Snickers.
