Sea Shepherd Ocean Conservation News

*** A company called Planktos Inc., (a for-profit enterprise calling itself an eco-restoration company, based in San Francisco in the United States with offices in Vancouver , Canada ), has targeted the international waters west of the GMR as the area to conduct experiments in seeding the oceans with iron dust to accelerate the production of phytoplankton.

Sea Shepherd along with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and the Galapagos National Park (GNP) are concerned that this experiment represents a threat because of possible unknown effects it could have on marine life and other ecosystems in Galapagos.

Sea Shepherd will also document and publicize the activities to educate the general public concerning the operation and the potential damages such an operation could cause. This coordination must take place immediately because of the imminent deployment of the iron dust in waters close to the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

*** The crew of Brazilian fishermen were captured on video killing 83 dolphins and joking about their illegal haul. The video showed the fishermen netting the dolphins, who suffocated because they could not surface to breathe. The images of captured marine tucuxi dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) was broadcast by GloboTV and became available to the press through the Brazilian Federal Governmental Agency - IBAMA.

(See website for video)

Brazil has the laws to protect dolphins and these laws must be shown to have strength. The only way to do that is to ensure strict punishment for the fishermen responsible for the deaths of these magnificent animals,” said Sea Shepherd Brasil Director Captain Paul Watson.

1. An amazing group of folks
"Years ago, I read a passage on ethics from a Lawrence Johnson where he wrote of the common thread that binds all animals, human, and non-human alike. "Well-being interest" he called the natural response of any living creature to danger. Corner a dog or a human and threaten them with death and the reaction is the same. Both will do anything that it takes to survive, biting, kicking, and struggling, until not a breath remains. And because of that, each creature shows the willingness to choose life over death. We act to respect that choice.

The distance between us and the fishermen's fighting catch decreased as a determined crewmember wrapped the line twice around the anchor winch, pulling in the tool of destruction one foot at a time. Closer and closer came the splashing until we could see three feet of silver and yellow below the surface of the water, tossing from side to side in a frenzy.

A set of tools grasped tightly in one-hand, Willie wrapped his other arm around a rope ladder that lowered him down to meet the determined tuna. The line tightened again as the fish was pulled in towards Willie's hopeful reach lengthened by a pair of side-cutters that instantly grabbed for a hook that quickly snapped under the pressure of a human hand. She swam away quickly. And without hesitation Willie was brought back on board as the winch dragged in another hook.

Two-hundred and seventy more to go."

2. It is true
animals fight for life. And also an animal will become incredibly grateful if you help it to live.

Sea Shepherd does not advertise like World Wildlife Fund and others and I did not know about them until reading about them on DU. They are especially inspirational, because they are not a giant organization.

3. Personally
I can't stand the WWF. I'm firmly against trophy hunting, and they support it in the name of "conservation"

I will always applaud them when they get into the mix on some issues, but they'll never see a dime of mine. Most of my dimes go to SSCS and like "direct action" organizations.

4. Right
I was just using them as an example. I used to donate to Greenpeace, but I stopped donating the way I used to. It would be nice if these organizations did city tours or something and you can help in other ways than money. I donate occasionally to charitable organizations, but very sparingly.
