What thanks do Europeans get for coming all the way over here to "help" them?

What does a conqueror have to do just to receive a little gratitude from the conquered?

2. Shoot, it's like we destroyed their country for nothing!

Frickin' ingrates! We go to all that time, trouble and expense (don't forget the expense) of totally destroying their country and none of them appreciates it. We've reduced their entire country to penury and set off a war of all against all, and this is the thanks we get!

Almost makes you wonder if it was worth it.
