Lieberman wants a "War on Terror" tax so that we can stay in perpetual war
WASHINGTON, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Sen. Joseph Lieberman said on Tuesday that Congress should consider a tax to fund the U.S.-declared war on terrorism and reduce the need to cut domestic programs to pay for security spending.

A former Democrat who supports the Iraq war and backs President George W. Bush's plan to send 21,500 additional troops to Iraq, Lieberman said the proposed increase in the Pentagon's budget for next fiscal year will squeeze funding for critical domestic programs.

"I think we have to start thinking about a war on terrorism tax," the independent Connecticut lawmaker said. "I mean people keep saying we're not asking a sacrifice of anybody but our military in this war and some civilians who are working on it."

"When you put together the (Pentagon) budget and the Homeland Security budgets, we need to ask people to help us in a way that they know when they pay more it will go for their security," he said during a Senate panel hearing on the defense budget request.

1. Of course the richest 1% in the country...
would not be expected to participate in this tax... That would be just foolish...

3. Sure, I'll go along with that. As long as it's a 50% tax on the total earnings of every warmongering
politico, defense contractor and oil company executive. Seems fair to me.

4. I think this is a good idea. Also have an Iraq tax.
All the funding for the Iraq war will only come out of that tax. It's the surest way to get Republicans to end the war, because they won't be able to defend not supporting the troops with a tax to fund them. :-)

8. I don't think you understand, this may be the best way to end the war...

if we retool it to be an Iraq Tax. If we spend money on Iraq only from a special Iraq tax, Republicans will be apt to end the war as quickly as possible to save their own money. No one will be able to argue against giving troops the money they need, so that's going to force them into passing the tax, then they will end the war ASAP to cut taxes and make themselves look good. Meanwhile soldiers are back home in the USA.
