1. and if there aren't the votes to impeach him now, why would there be during the couple of hours
that he's acting president?

Because you don't think as I do and I usually wind up learning something.

But, I guess I (still) don't understand why there is a DU contingent that is worried about votes to convict when the process itself would be so damaging to an already beleaguered GOP.

And, sorry, helderheid for getting all serious on your lighthearted thread. Oops!

7. Its not just the votes to convict -- its the votes in the House
I can't know this for certain, but based on discussions I've had with Hill staff, a sizable number of Democratic members have let the leadership know that they do not support commencing an impechment process unless there is bi-partisan support for the resolution to start the process, citing the fact that both the Nixon and Clinton impeachment processes were commenced with resolutions that were not strictly party-line (in the case of Nixon, the vote was 410-4; with Clinton, it wasn't so overwhelming, but still 31 Democrats supported authorizing the House Judiciary to conduct an investigation and hold hearings).

Pelosi's first job as Speaker is to know where the votes are. I believe that she has every reason to think that at this moment, the votes in the House aren't there and it would be a disaster to bring up a resolution that wouldn't pass or, even if it passed, did so by a margin of only one or two votes with a number of Democratic dissents.

8. It's a measure of how cowed we've been, low these many years.
Thanks for your answer. I still believe that the effort, particularly at this moment, would be beneficial for Democrats. And, yes, Nancy is in a difficult position.
