“Gays Rescued Me,” Says Tammy Faye
Edited on Fri Jul-20-07 08:42 AM by IanDB1
Tammy Faye Messner made an appearance on Larry King last night. Hopefully you all had a chance to hear what she had to say - if not, you’re in luck, because reader Alan sent along this collection of clips from the interview, including Tammy Faye discussing how the gays lent her a helping hand after Jim Bakker fucked her over.

http://www.youtube.com/v/2mx2Czj1H1Q

Son Jay also points out that Tammy Faye helped provide the bridge between the Evangelical movement and gay churches, particularly Troy Perry’s Metropolitan Community Church. Even if you’re not Christian or religious in any way, shape or form, you can’t deny Tammy Faye’s impact on our world. And, despite the terminal cancer, she’s still as cheery as ever. And her eyelashes still look swell!

Here’s the transcript of Tammy Faye’s appearance. Read it and weep - literally, it’s heartbreaking.

2. As bad as she looked.....
I saw the traces of the old Tammy Faye when she would smile or laugh. I will admit it. I cried a number of times during the interview. She has such grace and composure and I hope that things stay even for her.

5. I'll read the transcript. Thanks.
I just couldn't watch it last night...after seeing that clip of her that was posted here. It was just heartbreaking to watch.

She's a good person with a big heart. And I'm glad she passed on her acceptance of gay and lesbian people onto her son. Both of them are true Christians.

I want to find that link where people can pass on their good wishes to Tammy Faye.

8. I had one too
And my prayers go out to Tammy. But she still has all of the eye makeup on, even as sick as she is.

7. Even in the throes of cancer that's
destroying her body, she's reaching out to us
with her message,

--we all ALL his children---.

God bless you, Tammy!

9. Wow, I guess I haven't been paying attention
Last time I heard of Tammy Faye, she was this smarmy religious con artist with an air-conditioned dog house. What happened?

11. she hit rock bottom
after the PTL scandal, Jim left her with almost nothing. So she started to work in local evangelicalism again, many times in gay churches.

17. She turned her life around after the PTL scandals
You'd be hard pressed to find a better example of what Jesus actually taught than the post-PTL Tammy Faye. She's a big supporter of the GLBT community even standing up to the right-wing bastards who chastised her for hanging out with "the gays". She doesn't have a hateful bone in her body. I couldn't watch the interview last night because just the clips I saw on Entertainment Tonight were enough to make me cry.

If there were more professing Christians like Tammy Faye in the world I might not have left the church.

16. After all the stuff happend with Jim Baker she really turned around and
became what I call a "real Christian" who followed the teachings of Jesus who professed "blessed are the peace makers", The Jesus who talked about reaching out to the least among you. Not the wacked out Christians of the Dobson/Robertson/Falwell ilk. I've seen her on Larry King many times and she was always sincere and spoke from her heart. I saw the documentary "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" and I grew to really admire and care for her. I think she was on Larry King last night to kind of say goodbye :-(.

18. I'm with you
After seeing her on the Surreal Life I found myself baffled by how much I liked her, and did some reading up on what she's been up to since the PTL mess. She's a beautiful human being and a shining example of what "Christian" really means.

I think she was saying goodbye, too. :(
