1. He's a good looking guy. I wonder when the posts will begin....
that this girl student was lucky to have scored with her male teacher.

It's always said about the boy students when the teacher's a female.

10. Yeah, but as a teacher, he's not supposed to be
screwing the kids he's teaching.

It may have been consensual, but it's a violation of trust.

4. Sounds more like RAPE, to me. Reporters should be
ashamed to use the words 'having sex' or 'sexual contact' when a minor is involved.

5. Tricky situation - it is her word against his. Hard to know the truth.
It could be a set up for him, and/or he in fact could be a sexual predator of sorts.

This is the very difficult issue of sexual abuse and how it can be used to ruin good, decent people or in other cases it is legitimate. However, the difficulty lies in the accusation itself. That right there can often color someones opinion without any realm of evidence or proof that sexual abuse occurred.

On the other hand, many children in familial situations were never believed when they told their parents they were abused. Its tough all the way around. Perhaps that is why the sexual abuse accusation is a perfect tool to scapegoat individuals that others may not like. A potential witch burning tool if abused.

8. True, he is innocent until proven guilty, but in reading the article
it doesn't look good, but we will see.

6. You think this stuff only happens in Florida?
It would be the teacher you need to be angry with. If he's convicted by the courts, that is...

Now, if it comes to light that he had a history of this stuff and the schools were aware of it--then you can start blaming the folks on up the food chain--including the state.

In one local district we recently had a Second Grade teacher arrested on charges of having sexual activity with his female students. While the guy has not been tried yet, I will say that it is publicly available information that the man has had a history of arrests and even restraining orders for violent behaviors--yet he was teaching in that school.

In THAT case, I do blame not only that school district but also the state for allowing that man to retain a teaching certification with a legal history of violent crimes.

They are reporting in the papers that he had oral sexual contact with at least six little girls while they were blindfolded. I pray the newspapers here are wrong just like I hope they are wrong down there in Florida.

15. I don't really think the OP was meant to pick on Florida.
We like to pick on Florida just like the Republicans like to pick on California. Because of their large, diverse, mobile populations, both states have some things in common.

(Alright, the OP did specify why things like this happen in Florida. I think most of us know that they happen pretty much everywhere.)

16. Only half-serious/joking...
It was intended as a bit of a joke, as these things seem to keep happening in Florida...and yes, because it's fun to pick on Florida. ;)

14. Since 2000, FL has taken over
California as "Wacky State of the Union". Don't get me wrong, FL is a great state to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. We have numerous relatives who live there and I tell them they're nuts.

So anything strange, bizarre, or unsavory that happens there immediately becomes national news. Here in the Pittsburgh area, we'e had 3 cases of teachers involved with students just in the last few weeks. Has this news become known around the country? Of course not.

Also, as a teacher myself (who is completely appalled by any case of impropriety with students - not to mention grossed out), I've noticed that teachers who are accused of wrong-doing immediately make the news, along with clergy of any religion. I'm sure there are bad apples in all professions, but rarely are they made public in the news.
