Time for Congress to fire a shot across the bow.
Now that the White House has turned Executive Privilege into a tacit pre-emptive blanket pardon for everyone in the administration, it's time for Congress - both the House and the Senate - to send a clear message to Bush that no one in this country is above the law.

Senator Leahy? Representative Conyers? Pick a target.

I don't care who it is. Josh Bolton. Harriet Miers. Abu Gonzalez. Any one of them. House picks one, Senate picks one. Invoke Inherent Contempt and send the Capitol Police to pick them up, drag them into the respective houses of Congress, and throw them into a cell.

Then send a nice letter to Bush saying that Inherent Contempt has been invoked, and that continued non-compliance with the law will result in further invocations of Inherent Contempt. For Monica Goodling. For Karl Rove. Dick Cheney. George W. Bush.

If Congress doesn't slap back at this power grab and do it today, they may as well empty their desks and go home, because they for all intents and purposes are all out of a job.

Bush has declared the legal process irrelevant. Subpoenas? Quaint. Due Process? Yesterday's news? Rule Of Law? Dead, dead, dead.

Lock up a few of Bush's cronies and let him know that they'll work their way up the chain of command until they get to The Commander Guy himself.

Bush has a razor to the law of the land's throat. And if the Congress does not stop him, they will be helping him slit the jugular.

So. Senator Leahy? Representative Conyers? Pick one, and lock them up.

1. WH seems begging for the challenge
"Please don't throw me in dat briar patch" -- that seems to be what they're saying. They appear to want SCOTUS to rule.

So Dems had better have some strategy in place.

3. Powder, schmowder.
If they don't challenge this head-on, there won't be anything left to use that powder on.

6. I have to recommend this thread
because the actions of this administration demonstrate the contempt it has for our system of checks and balances and directly shows how they are willing to challenge it at every turn to try and bring it down.

7. What kills me is that this is NOT their choice to make!
Edited on Fri Jul-20-07 12:55 AM by Marr
These Constitutional duties have been entrusted to them-- not given to them. This is *our* Congress and *our* government, and they can't just opt out and let some maniac turn it into a banana republic because they feel it'll help them in the next election cycle. It's not an option. To fail in their basic duties here makes them no less traitorous than Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney.

9. If there were any doubts
we are now in constitutional crisis territory

What is at stake is nothing less than the Republic, which is dead... but the Code can still be run and perhaps there is a slight hope of resucitating the patient

11. Congress will do nothing but issue, "strongly worded statements."
And they will put on a show.....then fold, as usual. It will be the American people, who hate Bush, and the American military, that hates Bush, who will do something about it, if it comes to that.

13. The People of the United States must be told what's going on
If I were the Democratic Presidential candidates, I would hold a joint press conference to address the nation, each one of them united. Then if I were Congress I would start thinking about totally defunding the executive branch across the board and letting the People know why that radical step has become necessary. If Congress is no longer allowed a single subpoena for any reason whatsoever against the Bush Administration, it is to me a crisis of immense proportions.

14. The joint press conference is an amazing idea.
There's no way the Corporate media could ignore it.

And between all the candidates, they could give a presentation that spells it all out. they could even use small words so even the Freepers could understand it.

17. It seems that enough Americans understand what is going on.
The Libby commutation, busholini commanding that Ms. Meirs refuse to abide by a Subpoena & the Exec. Priv. invoked regarding Pat Tillman were the last clues that were needed. The Constitution & The Bill of Rights are in great peril. If Congress does not challenge this Fascist Regime and win America will turn into Amerika. Enough Americans now understand this. If Congress does not act will enough Americans take to the streets to demand that they do so?

Edited on Fri Jul-20-07 05:32 AM by Decruiter
Along with a host of others from our very rich history.

We have quite a number of them that I feel sure would be happy to come up out of the basement and help us out here. Well, no, not happy, perturbed probably, but nonetheless we are their kids and if we asked them, if we call upon them, they would be here for us now.

We can find them everyday in the Declaration of Independence.
