Hey all, please suffer my ignorance for moment as I ask if there is possibility or merit in public referendums on a national (or if need be, statewide) level. I'm not even meaning any specific resolution, but I wonder....
I've never lived in a jurisdiction with any (large-scale) referendum-votes, but I believe there are districts or states that have, and not always at the traditional election-day intervals. Am I right in thinking that? I seem to recall California being such a state...and didn't they even manage to recall a governor? I ask in honest inquiry about referendums (referenda?)
My larger point being: Wouldn't the prospect of having a venue for expressing their opinion lead a great majority to finally be able to voice the prevailing opinion about the direction our Nation is taking? I just got the strongest feeling that the time is right for giving The People an opportunity to speak up. I know that people want to, but we need a bigger forum so that we can hear each other.
I'll be Wiki-ing and Google-ing this for awhile, probably, but this post is just an invitation to anyone with knowledge-of or curisoity-about the topic to sound off.
Any thoughts?
