Family Research Council president rails against Giuliani candidacy

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said Monday if Rudy Giuliani wins the GOP presidential nomination Democrats will take back the White House in 2008.

"If by some chance Giuliani were to gain the Republican nomination it would set up a very similar scenario that we had last November," Perkins said in an interview with Christian Broadcasting Network. "A unenthusiastic Republican base which will suppress turnout and set up a Democratic victory."

Perkins comments come just as the former New York City mayor filed a formal statement of candidacy with the Federal Elections Committee -- another step towards his likely run for the White House.

"Americans do not yet realize how far outside of the mainstream of conservative thought that Mayor Giuliani social views really are," Perkins told CBN. "Once people focus on this election and the candidates, Giuliani's lead will diminish."

Let the implosion begin.

Rudolf Giuliani will make the trains run on time. Get the bumper sticker at my store.

Tony Perkins? Didn't he die? His movies appeared ok. Just kidding, this Tony Perkins appears a Republican enema bag.

2. Let's hope he is right. This may get the Ayatollah Robinson
to run to represent the fundies. That would really split the GOP. We should start a recruit Pat Robinson for Prez movement.

7. I think he's right
I think they dislike McCain more - but they clearly don't like either one. I don't know about Robinson coming in though. Love to see it, but the Republicans tend to have more party discipline than we do.

6. I was waiting for this. Guiliani is far too left on social issues for the
fundies and he *gasp* cheated on his wife in Gracie Mansion. Conservatives will never accept him as their nominee.

9. I though you had to be divorced to run
for prez. Isn't that an entrance criteria for them. Since the Southern Baptist have a divorce rate over 30% - those sinners - that shouldn't be a issue for them, but any pro-homo issues are.

8. Does that web site have downloadable "flyers"?
Download some, then wait ... if Rudy gets the nomination, then start distributing the "Evil Rudy" flyers ... with the Family Research Council's stamp of approval on them ... not before the nomination ...
