National Association of Black Journalists: Keep Imus Off the Air
Maynard Institute for Journalism Education: NABJ Says Keep Imus Off the Air
Richard Prince
July 18, 2007
Speculation Mounts That Shock Jock Will Return

As speculation mounts that Don Imus will return to the airwaves after his ouster in April for racist and sexist remarks, the National Association of Black Journalists, the first organization to call for his removal three months ago, says no way.

"NABJ and America applauded in April the decision of national broadcasters to remove his language from the national airwaves. We would hope that, just a few months later, they would not substitute a desire to cash in for the need to stand by their convictions," NABJ President Bryan Monroe told Journal-isms on Wednesday.

The stance puts NABJ at odds with Imus' most visible opponent during the controversy, the Rev. Al Sharpton, who told Radaronline.com, "My position is that we never called for him to be permanently barred from being on the air. We'll see when he comes back, and if he comes back, what are the boundaries and what is the understanding. We'll be monitoring the situation, but we wanted him to pay for being a repeat abuser, and he paid. We never said we didn't want him to make a living," according to Mike Boyle, writing on Wednesday in Radio & Records.

As reported on July 2, a spokeswoman for CBS Radio would not confirm or deny a report in the New York Post that Imus might return to CBS-owned WFAN Radio in New York....

1. NABJ is being racist now. They have no right to target Imus and keep
him off the air. IMO he should never have lost his job in the first place.

This trend of making targets of certain persons, candidates and businesses needs to stop.

Those who want to hear Imus have every right to have him back on air.

 Boo to NABJ!

3. I believe CBS had the right to let him go, considering his
history.

I think he's more suited to satellite radio, where he can make all of the bigoted and racist comments he wants.

5. NO WAY! Radio should be free. All radio.
Paying for radio and tv is just making some people very rich, sucking money from the poor and low income just to have access to the news and entertainment. Advertising pays the way for radio and tv. Fees for satellite and cable just adds the gravy.

8. Well, if you want free radio, then listeners and radio talent have
to deal with the reality that there are standards over the public airways.

And I just feel that CBS, as boss, has the right to dictate how far people like Imus can push the envelope.

After all, he's certainly not the first shock jock to be fired.
