Gunmen kidnap senior Iranian diplomat in Baghdad

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Gunmen in Iraqi army uniforms kidnapped a senior Iranian diplomat in Baghdad, Iraqi and Iranian officials said on Tuesday, and Tehran blamed the U.S. military and demanded his immediate release.

"We are dealing with this as a kidnapping," an Iraqi government official told Reuters.

The official said the diplomat, the second secretary at the Iranian embassy in Baghdad, was snatched in the central Karrada district on Sunday by 30 gunmen wearing the uniforms of a special Iraqi army unit that often works with U.S. military forces in Iraq.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini blamed U.S. forces for the kidnapping of Jalal Sharafi, saying it was carried out by a group attached to Iraq's Defence Ministry "which works under the supervision of American forces". snip

A U.S. military spokesman denied that U.S. forces had played a role in the incident, which comes amid tensions between the United States and Iran over Tehran's nuclear programme.

"We are not aware of any mission that even resembles this incident," a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, Lieutenant- Colonel Christopher Garver, said.

1. Who the hell knows?

It could even be something basic and criminally oriented as looking for ransom money. A retirement fund perhaps. It's so bad over there, it's just not really possible to do anything but guess...

Edit: Let's start with this: the US military guy quoted apparently says (just re-read about this issue from a different source) that he checked and no multinational coalition forces were involved in this incident. In other words, no US military involvement.

First thing that pops into mind: Okay, CIA.

If I was Iran, I'd yell too.

2. "Provocation". These slimy fucks are doing everything they can think
of to push Iran into killing some US soldiers. Our troops (whom we all support so famously) are being used as bait. When Iran retaliates and kills some GIs, there will be glee and high-fives in the WH. This is the absolute worst this nation has ever been. I can see no way this gets any better without massive bloodshed on American streets. I just have no faith any longer in politics to solve anything; not with the two parties we are stuck with. It is debilitating spiritually, morally, physically. This country is done - don't even bother with the fork...
