'Smoking' oven causes problems
Pizzeria owner gets warning
BY STEVE KEMME | SKEMME@ENQUIRER.COM

NORWOOD - Will DeLuca, owner of Betta's Italian Oven, was shocked to learn recently that a customer complained to health officials that his restaurant might violate the new state smoking law - even though Betta's hasn't permitted smoking since it opened three years ago.

He assumed the smoke that bothered the customer came from the restaurant's wood-fired oven, an essential part of his business.

"It's the Italian way to cook pizza," he said. "If you go to Italy, it's the only way they cook pizza."

At the request of an Ohio Health Department employee, DeLuca is writing a letter detailing how the oven operates and providing evidence that Betta's complies with the smoking law.
...

Some people who mistakenly think wood-fired ovens are banned by the new law, Carey said, usually cite a part of the law that defines smoking as "inhaling, exhaling, burning or carrying any lighted cigar, cigarette, pipe, or other lighted smoking device for burning tobacco or any other plant."

1. Pizza made over a wood fire - Man Oh Man Oh Man Oh Man is that goooood!
The type of pizza they make in Italy and southeastern France is too beautiful and delicious for words. I think though that the type of dough they use might have something to do with the different taste compared to America pizza, and all the olive oil.

12. Used to Live on Wooster Square in New Haven CT
Right near Sally's and Pepe's -- that was some great pizza.

In addition to the usual types, I loved the clam pizzas -- nothing but olive oil, clams, garlic, grated cheese, and seasonings.

7. Maybe someone has the details, but I'm pretty certain that
in some areas (California) restaurants are required to have pollution control devices on their stacks if they generate a lot of smoke. It may sound absurd, but in the LA basin, all those backyard barbecues are indeed part of the problem!

8. AHH, yet another reason Im glad I don't live in Ca. I've visited
several times, and the climate it wonderful, the scenery is beautiful, and it's terrific to be30 mins away from either the mountains or the beach, BUTTTT...your houses are WAY too expensive, taxes are too high, and all everyone does is complain about the air quality!

9. I can remember when it was considered normal for the air to be
orange and smell like sulfur. I know that now I can tell when it's an ozone day just by the way my lungs work. I'm glad people complain about air quality!

13. This would be laughable...
...if it weren't so stupid. Where do most folks think the food they go out for gets cooked? The microwave?

Geez Louise, now this is some crap. Seriously.
