Florida facing global warming effects now

Gov. Charlie Crist says the state needs to find new energy sources and combat climate change.
By Ken Kaye, South Florida Sun-Sentinel
July 13, 2007

MIAMI — Unless greenhouse gases are sharply reduced in coming decades, Florida could face environmental catastrophe, with rising seas, increasingly violent weather and severe droughts, Gov. Charlie Crist said Thursday.

That was the governor's opening statement at the two-day Serve to Preserve Florida Summit on Global Climate Change, which seeks to bring together political, business and environmental leaders to find alternative energy sources and urge conservation to combat the effects of global warming.

"Ultimately, this is as much about conservation as it is about climate change," said Crist, who is trying to be the state's most environmental governor.

A keynote speaker at the summit was Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an ardent environmentalist. He lashed out at the Bush administration, saying it has allowed coal-burning industries to flourish and air quality to suffer in return for political contributions.

"This is the worst environmental administration we've had in our history," said Kennedy, a New York attorney.

The White House has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated.

Kennedy said that though he is a Democrat and Crist is a Republican, the battle to clean up the environment should be nonpartisan. He praised Crist for taking environmentally friendly initiatives.

Summit for Global Climate Change

~~~~~~~~~
And this is where we will have success in mitigating the effects of the climate crisis, or at the very least slowing them down. By working in a non partisan fashion and picking this crisis up out of the political framework. I do believe there are Democrats who think this is only a "Democratic" issue, and that is wrong. It is an issue that effects all of us and not only should Democrats realize this, but RW pundits like Sean Hannity and his flat Earth society friends who only trash this issue because they too think that by doing so they are trashing Democrats. When the sea level rise is enough to truly make an impact on peoples' lives here, then what will they say? It is good to see Republican officials like Governor Crist looking beyond politics to seeing the big picture. I hope more on all sides of the aisle join him and I thank him for doing so.
Crist noted Florida is one of the most vulnerable states to global warming because of its long coastline, covering almost 1,300 miles, as well as its environmentally sensitive Everglades and coral reefs.
Crist sets Florida on a green path
Florida will act forcefully on its own to counter global warming, Gov. Crist said as he prepared to sign a series of pollution-fighting orders.
BY MARTIN MERZER
'We have a responsibility to face this reality head on and take action to address it,' Gov. Charlie Crist said of global warming
Surrounded by foreign officials but no one from the Bush administration, Gov. Charlie Crist warned Thursday that global warming poses such a dire threat to Floridians that the state must take immediate, dramatic and unilateral action.
The first phase of that initiative begins today as Crist signs unprecedented orders intended to help reduce pollution, slow global warming and position the state as a national model -- even as the federal government remains on the sidelines.
''We cannot afford to ignore this issue any longer,'' Crist told about 600 people attending his Summit on Global Climate Change. ``We have a responsibility to face this reality head-on and take action to address it.''
14. gov. crist is an amazing fellow
he fooled the people into thinking he was a repub and then became "everyman" once elected. I didn't vote for him, but I watch what he says and does and he constantly amazes me in taking the high road for we Floridians.
17. Theodore Roosevelt IV
The Co-Vice Chair of the Alliance for Climate Protection (Al Gore's organization) was also in attendance at this summit. I just find hope in that prominent Republicans are also standing up to address this crisis. Unless we break the false impression so many have that this is just a democratic vote getting mechamism, progress on this will be slower.We have got to cross political divides if we are going to ever see real progress on this now.
23. I just talked to someone yesterday...
Who claimed they didn't care what happened in the Arctic because it doesn't affect them :wow: ... So I explained how it does and am loaning them An Inconvenient Truth Monday. This is going to be a huge task to even explain to many the dangers surrounding changes in the Arctic, Antarctica, Greenland, and especially the ocean conveyor belt which is slowing down. So people are not going to be concerned unless they are educated or unfortunately, unless it truly does hits them personally.
