Shuttle's Name Misspelled On NASA Launch Pad Sign
Someone Called Kennedy Space Center NASA To Fix Typo

POSTED: 7:38 am EDT July 13, 2007
UPDATED: 9:25 am EDT July 13, 2007

The first NASA sign at launch pad 39A encouraging the next launch of space shuttle Endeavour at Kennedy Space Center was misspelled and noticed by someone looking at the craft.

When the shuttle rolled out from the Vehicle Assembly Building Wednesday, a giant "Go Endeavour" sign was put on a fence in front of the craft.

However, one item was missing from the sign: the "u" in Endeavour.

They have before-and-after photos, too.

I dread the launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantic and Discoverie.

2. Understandable, if you ask me
The reason for using the British spelling might not be universally known. It's only a banner - it's not like they painted it on the shuttle or something.

6. Not YET on the shuttle...
But if a certain major brewing company put out a banner at, say, a major-league ball game that said "Anheuser-Bush", somebody's head would roll for that. And 'I just used the American spelling' wouldn't cut it.

18. The Apollo 15 command module, also named in honor of Captain Cook's ship . . .
. . . was called "Endeavour." But if you look at NASA's own website regarding that particular spacecraft, you'll see references to both "Endeavor" and "Endeavour." There's a historical imprecision or carelessness going on here, but it hardly seems like that big a deal when all is said and done. Close enough for government work, at least.

4. Did they outsource the sign painting job, too?
However, it's not as if I don't see dozens of grammatical errors every single day, proudly printed by "professionals" and displayed on signage.

We make fun of "morans" and people with "hugh" and "series" problems that cast "asparagus" on others, but at least those people aren't charging others for their services.

17. Outsource It They Did
NASA is not in the signage business. And then it was just a matter of being in such a hurry to put the sign up, no one really "proofed" the job.

Of course, you have to admit they set up the mistake to happen by using a British spelling. Regarding everyday misspellings in the USA: Don't watch the CNN and CNN Headline News ticker tapes; they'll drive you crazy.

14. I dare our next President to have NASA name a shuttle "The Beagle"
HMS Beagle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HMS Beagle was a Cherokee class 10-gun brig of the Royal Navy, named after the beagle, a breed of dog. She was launched on 11 May 1820 from the Woolwich Dockyard on the River Thames, at a cost of £7,803. In July of that year she took part in a fleet review celebrating the coronation of King George IV of the United Kingdom in which she was the first ship to sail under the new London Bridge. After that there was no immediate need for Beagle so she was kept in reserve for five years and "lay in ordinary", moored afloat but without masts or rigging. She was then adapted as a survey barque and took part in three expeditions. On the second survey voyage the young naturalist Charles Darwin was on board, and his work would eventually make the Beagle one of the most famous ships in history.

19. I bet Cheney's yacht is Named The Nostromo
Nostromo (spaceship)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USCSS The Nostromo is a fictional starship, featured in the 1979 film Alien. The name is taken from the eponymous hero of the 1904 novel by Joseph Conrad.

Description

Commercial Towing Vessel Nostromo, an M-Class starfreighter property of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, is a tug, a towing vessel, hauling an enormous (some 1.5 miles in length) ore refinery and 20 million tons of raw ore, weighing many times the mass of the Nostromo. The ship itself is still substantial, over 60,000 metric tons and almost 245 metres (800 feet) long, including three decks, four holds, stores, engines, and lots of pipes and ducts; its escape ship is called Narcissus. The ship is fitted with a self-destruct system.

22. Heck, that's nothing
When my cousin graduated from the Naval Academy, the diplomas misspelled the name. The class got their diplomas with the misspelling, but had to turn them in to get their real diploma. Too bad - it would have been a collector's item.
