Let me talk to you about Cindy and her contribution to the nation.
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 07:13 PM by Skidmore
This summer I'm working with a very young woman just almost out of her teens and whose boyfriend is in Iraq. This young lady takes her lunch break mid afternoon everyday so that she can speak with her boyfriend on the phone. She's always so careful to time her workload so that she doesn't miss the call because he has to stand in line to place a call. She leaves the building with such anticipation on that young face. Today she came back and was quiet. Told me he didn't call, he must be on a mission. I sat in silence with her. She hadn't talked much about him to me yet so I asked her to tell me about him. She told me how they met, what he is like as a person, and their hopes and dreams if he comes home. She told me he doesn't know what they are fighting for anymore and they both just want the war to end and to be together. She told me about his parents and that his mom would probably get along with me real well because she also tracks on the politics of the nation and is active in antiwar protests. She told me that his mother had joined in with some woman whose son had been killed and who started protesting the war and is famous for it. I nodded and said, "Her name is Cindy Sheehan."

She raised her eyebrows and said, "I didn't know her name, but I know what she does."

I told her that now she knows her name and I talked to her about the Peace House in Crawford and that Cindy has said she will campaign against Pelosi if the war doesn't end. She told me, "I need to read about this more. I've been so busy and tired, but I need to know more."

I told her that Google can be her friend.

She told me, "I just want it to end and I'm glad Cindy has done what she has."

For those of you who choose to tear Cindy down and to bad mouth what she does, think again. Cindy is the voice for many who can't speak. She was also a voice that soared above the babble. Do you really believe we would be where we are now as a nation without her voice and her message. It is my message. It is the message of my young friend and her young man.

Thought of you when I was talking with her. How are you doing? It's been a busy summer and I don't get time to post much.

6. I'm OK.
Could use some warm vibes come August though. Surgery & biopsy (possible cancer) On going problem that has now progressed to the next level of treatment

We found out a couple of months ago that my husband is scheduled to go back to Iraq in 15 months. We're hoping Congress stops the madness before then.

2. Cindy is the voice of Americans not politicians
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 07:15 PM by Robson
Politicians (regardless of party) always like the status quo where they retain their position and their priviledge....while average Americans get screwed.

8. It sounds to me like all Cindy's efforts have brought her to a
place that she now will have to ask our political leaders to step aside. Cindy and the rest of us know that stalling is the game here and if she(Cindy)has to, she will move into this new arena, and move the war to a close along with this administration. I wish it was a Democrat leading the way, but it's not. The message will need to be delivered. Even if it is not by a Democrat.

11. The OP is another intentional misunderstanding of DU, IMO
Few, if any, DUers tear Cindy Sheehan down for her enormous contribution to the anti-war movement. She was the conscience of the nation at Casey's Camp.

But she's pretty dumb, IMO, and her 'usefulness' is near zero when she exposes her gross ignorance of history.

We attack Cindy because she's a dope, not for her previous contributions.

... it's almost like she didn't say it at all! Ta-da!

12. Reading your story just gave me the chills. Cindy has done so much for this country.
I am behind her 100%. I am thoroughly dismayed and disgusted by all the negativity about her at DU. Very, very discouraging. We are never going to get our country back, if we are not willing to throw the bums out that got us here...and I mean ALL the bums...in both parties. They have been working for one goal...empire for the elite. Millions have died, lives have been destroyed. It's time to put an end to the insanity.

16. Cindy is a loving Mom and compassionate human being with the courage to take a stand,...
,...on behalf of ALL OF US, her hope in and love for humanity, eternal.

People like these,...are ALWAYS crucified,...in some way or another,...BECAUSE THEY ARE IMPACTFUL.

If I had to ask one thing of Cindy, I'd ask her to stay focused and veer away from the 'stone-throwers' at every corner. I'd ask her to do that because, I KNOW in my heart her genuineness and Love,...and, I want to help her keep that alive in spite of the resistence.

Cindy, there is plenty of Love and Compassion and REASON to draw from in this world. IGNORE THE HATRED, FRUSTRATION, JUDGMENTALISM,...and all that other crap. Keep centered.

17. I'm glad her work against the war has inspired some
But she's not campaigning against Pelosi if the war doesn't end. She's campaigning against Pelosi because Pelosi won't push impeachment. Impeachment won't end the war. Two different issues.

In fact, when Pelosi announced that they'd be introducing war ending legislation this week in Congress, I wondered why Cindy didn't react. Isn't that THE issue? Instead, Cindy moved on to John Conyers.

Why is she more interested lately in impeachment than ending the war?

I wish she'd focus on the anti-war efforts where her status as a grieving mother makes her powerful. It's when she wanders off into other arenas that she loses effectiveness.

19. Human beings are complicated. They tend not to do one thing.
They tend not to fit stereotypes or PR campaigns.

Cindy isn't perfect and I disagree with her often but I respect her right to be a human bean. :)

20. I don't think I'm trying to wedge her into a stereotype
I just know what affected me the most of all the things she's done.

Her original Crawford protest.

And seeing the OP tell someone that Cindy was going after Pelosi to end the war when that's not quite what she's after Pelosi for at the moment bugged me some. So I mentioned it.

She certainly has a right to do what she wants. And I have the right to wish she was concentrating where her mojo works the best.

She's a human being, but she is also a public figure, with all the crapola that comes with it.

21. I think I understand, LittleClarkie. Impeachment is a major concern
among peace activists because it's one more way to slow this misAdministration down. Let alone, they deserve it because there's so much more than a blue dress in their closet.

It might be a good thing to remember that Nancy is a very able politician and that she's faced critics before.

23. No worried about Nancy
And I didn't realize that impeachment was big with peace activists. Some how I don't think impeaching them will end the war though. It'll still be the same basic folks in power.

Thing is, if Nancy pushes for the impeachment of both Bush and Cheney, isn't she next in line after them. Sort of like she'd be lobbying to become the president? I can see where somebody else needs to get the ball rolling besides her, somehow.

Maybe Conyers is the man after all for the job of "getting the ball rolling"

25. Interesting times. Nancy can't look like she's making
a power grab and yet, she has to answer to her district. I don't know that I could balance that load. Let's see how we do.

22. Yes, I'm quite sure we would
I am not anti-cindy or pro-cindy. I feel for her loss and I am glad she's an activist. I think more Americans should be activists. Not party activists, but issue activists. Especially peace activists.

But I'm pretty certain that America would have turned against the war with or without Sheehan.

Sheehan isn't some sort of touchstone. She's barely even recognizable to the majority of Americans.

She's a saint on the left and a quack on the right, among people like us who argue politics on the Internet.

But in breakfast nooks around America, Sheehan running against Pelosi isn't on their radar.

It's really sad that proselytizing about an icon is more important than encouraging people to speak and think for themselves.
