US Sen David Vitter (R-LA) releases statement on DC Madam listing
from Atrios

"This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible. Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling. Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there-with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way," Vitter said.

9. No issue more important than banning same-sex marriage to David Vitter
In June 2006, in line with several of his Republican colleagues in the Senate, Vitter came out strongly in favor of amending the U.S. Constitution to ban same sex marriages. He said, "I don't believe there's any issue that's more important than this one ... I think this debate is very healthy, and it's winning a lot of hearts and minds. I think we're going to show real progress."<3>

At a Lafayette Parish Republican Executive Committee luncheon, Vitter also compared gay marriage to hurricanes Katrina and Rita, stating, "It's the crossroads where Katrina meets Rita. I always knew I was against same-sex unions." <4>

"But as usually is the case in Washington, much of it is dull. There were no members of Congress that we could find in these phone records, no White House officials.

Quite frankly, but for the few exceptions, most of the men on this list just aren't newsworthy, not even as customers of the D.C. Madam's escort service."

42. And then there's the Abramoff connection
There was something in Raw Story a while back -- for which the link I had saved no longer seems to work -- saying:

Then-Rep. David Vitter (R-LA) attended a $1,000-a-plate dinner hosted by Abramoff for the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee while he was meeting with Abramoff’s attorneys in an eleventh hour maneuver to insert a provision worth tens of millions of dollars to Abramoff’s Native American client.

Attending the same Sept. 9, 2003 function at Abramoff’s restaurant, Signatures, was Deputy Majority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA), the highest ranking appointed congressman in the House. Three months earlier, Cantor signed a letter along with House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) urging the Department of the Interior to back a move favoring Abramoff’s client, the Louisiana Coushatta tribe. . . .

In a statement to RAW STORY late Monday, Vitter, who is now a Louisiana senator, said Abramoff didn’t attend the dinner. Sen. Vitter maintains that he met Abramoff only once and that he didn’t know Abramoff was behind the drive to aid the Louisiana Coushatta tribe. . . .

The listing for the event, however, was “Join Congressman Vitter (LA-01) for a Cocktail Reception and Dinner Hosted by Jack Abramoff with Special Guest Chief Deputy Majority Whip Eric Cantor.”

David Vitter - Louisiana

This far-right, family-values, three-term Congressman becomes the first Republican Senator elected in Louisiana since Reconstruction. As Vitter prepared to run for governor in 2002, the secretary of the Jefferson Parish Republican Party accused him of an 11-month affair with a prostitute. He denied the allegations but withdrew from the governor's race due to marital problems. Two years later Vitter--whom Charles Pierce calls "a polite David Duke"--ran for the Senate opposing all forms of abortion, gun control and affirmative action, prompting cries of racism in the heavily-African American state. He also ran possibly the most ludicrous ad of the political season, showing UN troops from Libya, North Korea and Cuba taking over Louisiana elections and lowering the American flag. Vitter even outdid his formidable arch-conservative colleagues by scoring a perfect 100 from the ACU in 2002, for a lifetime average of 93.

Vitter Pushes for Reauthorization of Abstinence Education Program

June 25, 2007 -

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Sen. David Vitter last week authored a letter to the chairman and ranking member of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee expressing support for reauthorization of the Title V Abstinence Education Program of the Social Security Act. Twelve senators joined Vitter in writing in support of the program.

“This a valuable program with proven results, but it is nearing its expiration. We must reauthorize this program so we can continue the incredible strides we have made in teaching teens about both risk avoidance and protecting themselves from potential abuse,” Vitter said.

51. The New Orleans' newspaper story on this:
Vitter's number on D.C. madam's list
Posted by kmarszal July 09, 2007 9:49PM

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. David Vitter, R-La., apologized Monday night for "a very serious sin in my past" after his telephone number appeared among those associated with an escort service operated by the so-called "D.C. Madam."

Vitter's spokesman, Joel Digrado, confirmed the statement in an e-mail sent to The Associated Press.

"This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible," Vitter said in the statement. "Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling. Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there _ with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way."

The statement containing Vitter's apology said his telephone number was on old phone records of Pamela Martin and Associates before he ran for the Senate.

Palfrey's attorney, Montgomery Blair Sibley, told the AP, "I'm stunned that someone would be apologizing for this already." He said Palfrey had posted the names of her escort service's clients online Monday, but he did not know whether Vitter's name was among them.

But the paper adds that they have been unable to find the list.

52. Southern Regional Chair for Rudy Giuliana
The Rudy Giuliani Presidential Exploratory Committee today announced that Senator David Vitter will serve as the Southern Regional Chair. Senator Vitter will help lead the campaign’s efforts to build support in the south and in the United States Senate.

In announcing his endorsement, Senator David Vitter touted Giuliani’s leadership and reputation as a proven problem-solver. “Rudy Giuliani has the strong, unwavering leadership and sound judgment we need in this time of war and terrorist threat. His performance under the extreme pressure of September 11th proves he is the determined leader our country needs to face today’s challenges head-on.”

“I believe the Republican Party needs to always be the party of free market economics and reform. Rudy implemented those principles as Mayor of New York by cutting taxes 23 times, making government more efficient and moving welfare recipients into jobs. It’s exactly the kind of conservative reform the federal government needs,” Vitter concluded.

58. The Grand Ole Pyramid Scheme
They take the money from the struggling members and promise them that they too can be wealthy and that greed is good and American. The poor suckers think they can be gold and platinum members, they bring others into the fold like all good networkers do, but they never see the wealth because it is only for the chosen few.

71. IMO, faxes are the best way to get your point across
There's nothing that will annoy the staffers more than the fax machines going off the hook with letters asking for Vitter to resign. And if they are annoyed, they will take notice.

56. I just love it when these hypocrites invoke God
People like Vitter are ALWAYS the first ones to point their bony fingers at others and judge them but when they are caught violating a commandment they claim "God has forgiven them". Oh, in their world God forgives them, but no one else.

I hope this makes sense; I'm hopped up on allergy medicine.

64. Oh man, this is good, but even though
I am laughing right now, I also feel anger because yet again the repukes have acted hypocritically and yet, at least for the moment, the MSM could care less. We'll see what happens. He did of course apologize and acknowledge God so in the eyes of many all is forgiven, but if you are Michael Moore, watch out! You're the Devil! :sarcasm:

Nobody is going to swallow that "I have sinned" routine.
Well, not unless he goes on tv and cries big crocodile tears ala Jimmy Swaggart.

"Please forgive me, I have sinned."

90. This DC thing in new to me...
I had heard that Vitter got his name mixed up in a prostitution sting here in NOLA. Nice to know he hasn't changed.
When he ran for elective office for the first time, it was to replace David Duke in the Louisiana Legislature. In running for that seat, Vitter more than once billed himself as "David Duke without all the baggage."

I'm not going to scream myself hoarse calling for his resignation. If he were to confine himself to working conscientiously for the recovery of New Orleans, I could forget about his wenching. He won't, though. He'll blunder in front of another microphone and smear someone else soon.

I am happy that this will be the first time most people in the U.S. will have heard about David Vitter.
