Right Wing Launches Dishonest, Misinformed Attacks Against Live Earth

Right now, the Live Earth concert series is ongoing in each of the seven continents. Spearheaded by Vice President Al Gore, the event “marks the beginning of a multi-year campaign…to drive individuals, corporations and governments to take action to solve global warming.”

With more than 2 billion people in 100 countries across the globe expected to tune in, the concerts are “an unprecedented opportunity to ask for the world’s attention long enough to deliver an SOS and then to begin delivering information about the solutions to every single person,” says Gore.

But the right-wing is pushing back against the concerts in an effort to protect the interests of the oil lobby. Leading the charge is the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a think tank funded by both the oil and auto industries. On MSNBC’s Tucker yesterday, Myron Ebell, the director of energy and global warming policy at CEI, said Gore “makes this stuff up” about global warming and “there is no scientific support for his claims.” Watch it:

After downplaying concerns about global warming, Ebell switched tones and began criticizing the concerts “because they just use too much energy.” In fact, Live Earth organizers worked hard to minimize the energy usage of the entire event. For example, the Live Earth organizers intentionally organized the concerts in such a way that a minimum of jets would be used. “In the planning stages, all air travel has been put through a rigorous approval process and trips deemed necessary” are being offset through carbon credits and investments in renewable energy, John Picard, leader of the event’s sustainability team, told the Associated Press.

1. I love to see the right wing dig in against this issue
Nothing kills an ideology like being on the wrong side of an issue that determines whether the entire species survives.

On Edit: Did you read the comments at the end of the article? LOVED this one:

5. Do you know why this event is making us so mad?

It’s not because of global warming or “oil lobby”.

It’s because the entire event embodies what we absolutely detest in you progressives and the left in general: things like your unlimited smugness, the use of arts and this intolerable drive for community based/oriented politics, sharing and compassion - the stench of weakness is overwhelming.

Rightly pegged, I think, shortly after as a "parody troll." :D

when talking to chad lowe - she called it hot air - and the waste and I thought what about the waste of air and energy coming out of fox tabloid news and what about the waste coming from all the bombs and bullets of this illegal war - and what about the waste of flying the idiot around the country pretending he cares - going to new orleans and doing nothing - they blocked help getting there in the first place and turned down aid from all kinds of countries - talk about waste - they are a waste

And then what will their blatant lies do for their *message*? They've lost all credibility.

12. I have to believe
that the 26% of the people in this country that still support bush and his crazy policies are either stupid or stubborn. There is no way that they can believe that all the melting of the icebergs and all the other horrendous things happening is not true.

They don't want to believe. It serves their money interests not to.

14. I really think seeing liberals and progressives having fun
and supporting a good cause at the same time pisses republicans off!
I will never understand anyone that doesn't think conservation on any scale is a waste of time

if everyone just did a little bit..............

13. 99% of Scientist agree...
We do affect our Environment and Global Warming is real. So, of course we are going to have people like the CEI kooks who want to protect their interest. If people use less Oil/Gas, then their revenues go down...pitty.

Whatever that 1% has to bitch about isnt worth listening too. LIVE EARTH message, I hope will be heard. With as many people expected to see this unpresidented event, I would think that some change will come from it.

With LIVE EARTH and SiCKO, corperate monsters are in a frantic/panic and I thinks it well over due for those bastards to get a swiff kick in the nuts.

16. The more the rightwingers lie...
the more they seal they're own fate.
Their whole belief system is based on falsehood and deception.
Inevitably, they can't hold up under the weight of their own bullshit.
It's freakin' hilarious the mess they make of themselves.
