Fred Thompson's "bizarre" denial that he lobbied for abortion-rights group
Down goes Fred!!! And, Fred, we hardly knew 'ya!

http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-thompson7jul07,0,54260.story?coll=la-home-center

Former Rep. Michael D. Barnes (D-Md.), a colleague at the lobbying and law firm where Thompson worked, said that DeSarno had asked him to recommend someone for the lobbying work and that he had suggested Thompson. He said it was "absolutely bizarre" for Thompson to deny that he lobbied against the abortion counseling rule.

"I talked to him while he was doing it, and I talked to about the fact that she was very pleased with the work that he was doing for her organization," said Barnes. "I have strong, total recollection of that. This is not something I dreamed up or she dreamed up. This is fact."

2. Well, as Nixon said, he is "Dumb as Hell"
Just more proof that, on this, Nixon was right.

4. Maybe, but Nixon used Fred Thompson as a mole to spy on the prosecution (Watergate)
Now THAT'S a story I'd like to see Fred Thompson deny in a presidential debate. :D

I am so glad you brought it up, I just love posting this about Dumb as Hell, lol!

Not all would put a heroic sheen on Thompson's Watergate role

WASHINGTON -- The day before Senate Watergate Committee minority counsel Fred Thompson made the inquiry that launched him into the national spotlight -- asking an aide to President Nixon whether there was a White House taping system -- he telephoned Nixon's lawyer.

Thompson tipped off the White House that the committee knew about the taping system and would be making the information public. In his all-but-forgotten Watergate memoir, "At That Point in Time," Thompson said he acted with "no authority" in divulging the committee's knowledge of the tapes, which provided the evidence that led to Nixon's resignation. It was one of many Thompson leaks to the Nixon team, according to a former investigator for Democrats on the committee, Scott Armstrong , who remains upset at Thompson's actions.

snip

Thompson, in his 1975 memoir, wrote that he believed "there would be nothing incriminating" about Nixon on the tapes, a theory he said "proved totally wrong."

snip

"Even though I had no authority to act for the committee, I decided to call Fred Buzhardt at home" to tell him that the committee had learned about the taping system, Thompson wrote. "I wanted to be sure that the White House was fully aware of what was to be disclosed so that it could take appropriate action."

more, oh so much more

I seem to remember Dumb as Hell was supposed to announce soon, if not already, yet he has not, hmmmm, wonder if all this truth coming out about him will make him think twice?

8. Nixon used Thompson as mole after calling him "dumb as hell"
ha ha ha, ho ho ho, hee hee hee, (sniff). This is just hilarious.

Nixon was disappointed with the selection of Thompson, whom he called "dumb as hell." The president did not think Thompson was skilled enough to interrogate unfriendly witnesses and would be outsmarted by the committee's Democratic counsel.

This assessment comes from audio tapes of White House conversations recently reviewed by The Associated Press at the National Archives in College Park, Md., and transcripts of those discussions that are published in "Abuse of Power: The New Watergate Tapes," by historian Stanley Kutler.

"Oh shit, that kid," Nixon said when told by his chief of staff, H.R. Haldeman, of Thompson's appointment on Feb. 22, 1973.

"Well, we're stuck with him," Haldeman said.
