Mitt Romney as the GOP nominee would be the best thing ever
Romney is so ridiculed by everyone that knows his name in MA-- he's the (former) governor of MA, who lives in NH, who originally lived in Utah, and made a living of traveling the country bashing his own state that he was elected to be governor. He often complained how "awful" it was to be a Republican in the "bluest of the blue" states. This guy is a weiner, a whiner, and has possibly the greatest potential of the possible nominees to just be curb stomped in every way. In addition to being a loser, he also has flipped on several issues, most prominently gay rights and abortion, in a move to appeal to the RW jackals.

Compared to McCain and Guilliani, Romney is a candidate of almost W quality; any decent guy the Democrats field should be able to manhandle Romney easily.

Thoughts?

1. I dunno, Giuliani has a lot of baggage
I mean, a mistress and a wife living in a taxpayer funded mansion? That seems pretty bad to me. Especially for a so called righteous guy. But he is also pro choice and so likely won't get the nomination anyway.

3. that's what I mean
I have no idea why people are entertaining Guilliani as a realistic nominee-- I see him having a snowball's chance in hell of seeing that. Baggage aside-- he is pro gay rights, pro choice: how on earth is he going to get the nomination??

McCain I see as a legit, serious threat if he's the nominee. But Romney has this folksy, down to earth shtick that the GOP ringleaders seem to gravitate towards--and he is very vulnerable there.

2. He would also be the best candidate for Obama to face off against
Romney only served one term as Governor, while Obama will have served four years in the Senate by January 2009, in addition to the years he served as a state senator.

Or Edwards, for that matter.

Personally, if we run a Gore + Obama ticket, I think it's game over for the GOP--whoever they throw out.

edit: Romney served for 2 terms. Even then, that's weaksauce.

8. Sorry, wasn't interested in more than one term!
Actually Mitt was elected for one 4 year term in Massachusetts in 2002. Had trouble staying interested as it was and hasn't been seen in Massachusetts for months. Did get to hear him at a planning board seminar and I can tell you he would appeal to your average republican business type. Lots of talk about running the government like a business, lets get things done, no new taxes...etc. Raised fees like crazy and RE taxes are up across the state because of cuts to state funds going to local governments...or maybe and mainly because of hugh costs of health insurance to all the town, county and state employees. You gotta read Under The Banner Of Heaven : A Story Of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer before you support a Mormon for the Presidency and tell me what that faith is all about.

9. Romney served 30 days as governor.
The rest of the time he was running for president.

5. I disagree.
There's no guarantee the repubs will not cheat again and we'll end up with at least 4 more years with an idiot for President.

6. but that's a threat no matter who they run
Which is why it's important for us to have a strong candidate that will exploit the weaknesses of a weak candidate like Romney--if we smash him by 10 percentage points, no matter what the GOP Diebold machine does can compensate for an ass-whomping.

7. The Republicans are just looking for someone who looks "presidential" at this point
Someone they can then mold around the issues to fit their idea of a candidate. (God, Guns & gays)
Senator Maccaca was this "presidenty" lookin' guy until he showed everone how stupid he is.

11. Him or Guilliani are a Democrat's dream come true.
 Guilliani and all his divorces could make for some great campaign fodder. He's Pro-choice, pro-gay marrigae and has made MILLIONS on dollars off the blood of 911. Mitt is in the same boat...lots of fodder from both.
