Crowds Pray To Frozen Virgin Mary In Store Freezer

POSTED: 11:52 am EST January 15, 2007
UPDATED: 12:15 pm EST January 15, 2007

An ice formation inside a Morton, Texas, grocery store's freezer is prompting tears from people who see it and has apparently answered the prayers of some visitors, according to a Local 6 News report. Morton Thrifty Foods employee Alma Avalos said when she went to the back she noticed that some drops of water from the ceiling had frozen.

As more and more people began to hear about the Virgin Mary, they started traveling in droves to see the ice. Some people cried when they spotted the ice and others said it answered their prayers. "I had a lump in my breast and yesterday when I went home it disappeared," a woman said. "I don't have it no more."

Others said they believe the ice formation is the real thing.

"There are some really Catholic people that really cherish her and they really know it's her and stuff like that and they are really amazed," visitor Stephanie Santos said.

Workers at Morton Thrifty Foods said they will keep the Virgin Mary in the freezer.

because that's what it looks like to me, too, if I had to pick something besides a lump of ice.

Fundies should take up caving. They'd really love stalagmites.

8. Fundies?
Well, these people aren't "fundies" in the right-wing Christian fundamentalist sense, they don't generally venerate Mary. Catholics do though.

It's been cold here in TX lately, better this week though. Last week we were in a deep freeze. Nights and mornings are still freezing and below. So no surprise here, maybe a leak or just condensation from a pipe.

I believe it is a sign. I see it now. This is not just any ordinary condensation. That leak was a message from above. Cast off the shoe, follow the stalagmite.

That's what I call my aunt--strictly Roman Catholic, but frothing-at-the-mouth, "All non-Roman Catholics are going to hell especially those brownskin heathens my darling George W is working to wipe off the face of the earth", Rush-lovin', Fox News-watchin' Repub = Catholic fundie in my book.

Sigh. Yes, I still love her, because she is my aunt. But I sure can't talk to her much!

54. Even most ultra-conservative Catholics aren't prone to
watching ice melting and calling it the mother of God.

Think "virgen de Guadalupe" or Lourdes, and you get the right sort of Catholic. Mostly poor, mostly poorly educated--and in the US mostly immigrants or their children. And most don't necessarily push for the same kinds of Bible interpretation and preaching that American protestant fundies do; in fact, they may frequently be social conservatives, but I can't put them in the same class as Falwell and his minions.

26. These aren't "fundies" in the usual sense of that word
...if by "fundies" you mean Fundamentalist Evangelicals. Those fundies are, first off, mostly anglo, and secondly very anti-Mirian. Given that A) this is Texas, B) this is a Mirian apparition, and C) every person quoted has an hispanic-sounding name, my guess would be that the throngs are, first off, mostly hispanic, secondly, Roman Catholic, and thirdly, have almost nothing in common with the evangelical movement other than a rough agreement on the accuracy of the Nicene creed.

Thanks for the post. That bothers me, too. "Fundamentalist" is a word that applies to a specific movement within Protestant Christianity, but it more often gets used as a synonym for "one who has a strong opinion regarding religion."

53. I use this as a definitions of "fundamentalism"...
someone who believes that not only is their way the right way, but it is the only right way, and they have a mission to not only live and be their right way themselves but to make others live in their way also by attempting to convert them and, if they fail at that, by just making them.

I see fundamentalism not just as a religious thing, but can be about anything, any way of being (religious, political, monetary for instance)

51. We don't pray to icons either

There aren't Catholics who think an image of Mary is going to intercede on our behalf. People create images of Mary, Jesus, St. Peter, and whoever to honer them. We don't pray to the item. An apparition is what someone wants to make of it, others of faith are free to believe or not believe that an image of our idea of the image of Christ or Mary or whoever in ice, a piece of cheese, the sky, or where ever is divine.

And you don't have to see an image to see Jesus and Mary everywhere.

Yes, I'm sure the Virgin Mary chose the freezer of "Morton's Thrifty Foods" to make an appearance. Just like she chooses to appear on grilled cheese sandwiches and dirty highway overpasses. If VM really wants to make a statement, how about an appearance at the SOTU tonight, where she and her son can smite the evildoer-in-chief to the delight of an audience of millions?

Calls an emergency Cabinet meeting and says "Look what I made, look what I made". James Dobson and Pat Robertson were called in to see what our President made and declared it a miracle. Presidential crapper to be moved as is to sit in a shrine in the still to be built Presidential Library.
