Australian Prime Minister fuels talk of Iraq withdrawal - They left Vietnam right before we did

Australian Prime Minister John Howard has spurred speculation he is preparing to withdraw troops from Iraq by highlighting his original commitment to the US: that troops would be pulled out after the invasion.

The original understanding before the 2003 assault "was that after the sharp end was over we were not going to have any troop presence", Mr Howard said yesterday.

Mr Howard recalled the initial plan as he defended the low-risk strategy for troops in Iraq against criticism that Australia was not pulling its weight.

Australian troops have been posted to low-combat zones and have suffered no fatalities as a result of hostilities.
