Is it worth debating Someone who Constantly Claims Michael Moore Lies?
Edited on Mon Jun-25-07 09:56 AM by romantico
No matter how often I correct and send links to a co-worker, he STILL repeats the Michael Moore lies. You know, how Fahrenheit 911 has been debunked, How Michael Moore is a liar, how he distorts the facts. Of course, I love to remind him that Michael Moore has never been sued, but that he ignores and just carries on with the lies. Part of me says why bother? I am not going to convince him, stop wasting time and movie on. The other part makes me want to wear him down. I have seen him just give up if challenged so part of me wants to call him on the Michael Moore lies. He is spouting all this ditto spew to friends and sending out emails, like he is DESPERATE or something to stop people from listening to him. What should I do? Ignore him or call him out on every lie and expose him?

1. I'd ignore him; he's pushing your buttons because he wants a reaction
and knows you'll react. Ignore him; he'll probably miss you! ;)

2. Well, if you've already countered him...

You're probably best off simply ignoring him...

7. Best Idea Yet.
I started reporting Fundy/RW/Neocon emails a while back, until I found out that the company actually LIKED them.

10. He's not not doing it on Company time
We both go to the same message board but he talks about it in the breakroom, in the parking lot, we all sometimes go out for lunch and he can not go a day without bashing liberals,Michael Moore, etc.Sad thing is, he is not a bad guy but he is one of the 5 people on the planet who actually think Bush is a great leader and misunderstood.

19. So what! plant the seed of doubt! He would do it to you in a second!
Show the twerp what untruths lead to.

If his actions bother you at work it dosent matter when or where he is harassing you, he is proballying bothering others as well.

Dont you think he would drop a dime on you if he could.

4. How are you attempting debate?
Are you attempting to use multiple and impartial sources (cause like continuously citing Moore and Franken and so on isn't going to win you points even with someone as liberal as me)?

Are they responding with the same tired sources?

I think your arguments with this guy are probably a waste of time on both side.

Michael Moore doesn't need your help. If your mutual friends are so damn dumb that they'd believe right wing nutjob propaganda, then good riddance, who needs em?

5. Is it interfering with work? I was taught that one never discusses politics
or spirituality in the workplace, period.

Guess I'm a relic.

Anyway, I've found a lackadaisical "Whatever" to be most effective. The backhand wave is also a nice touch. They get even more frustrated if they can't get a rise out of you, in my experience (I have been through the same thing).

You might try it

You can't win. It would be for your peace of mind to ignore him.

11. I have a wingnut friend who spews all kinds of nonsense
mostly just to irritate me. It's a manifestation of that basic fascist hostility. It used to bother me, but now I just play along. If he says that the Libberuls are trying to admit all those wetbacks because we need the votes, I don't bother to point out that Bush is the one pushing loosened immigration. I just say, "Well, yeah, that's right. We're just gonna bury your white male Protestant ass with brown people. If I were you, I'd start learning Spanish, because as soon as we get enough of them in here, we're gonna outlaw English."

12. Are you saying Moore lies or your co-worker accuses Moore of being a liar
*confused*

If it's the latter, the way I handle it is along the lines of "I've made every effort to be open-minded and listen/read what you have to say on the issue. It seems you either don't feel the need or have the respect for me to do the same. It's obvious that anything dealing with Michael Moore (or fill in the blank) has become some sort of game with you and I no longer have an interest in playing. When you decide to get serious and discuss facts, give me a call."

14. then just call this person out and say..you are lying!!
i won't debate people i have told facts to anymore...i have many repug friends..and i have sent them the truth from day one..now at parties or just hanging out..i have warned them all..tell your rethug lies or talking points around me,..and i will call you out..no more debate..no more discussion..

and it happened recently at a party ..one rethug friend..repeated the * lies..and i said very loudly to stop this persons lies..i said loud..that is a lie..you are now lying ..then i called the person on it..and said..i have proven over and over to you that is a lie..when do you take responsibility for your lies??

the person got very embarrassed...( and that was what i wanted to happen)..and others then chimed in and said ..i was right...
whereas a couple years ago i would have been piled on..not anymore..now an entire room of people said..i was right and that we all need to take responsibility for the lies being perpetrated..

it was a freeing moment in time..lol...

and i would not back down..( yes i got the "look" from the hubby..and i didn't give a shit!!..not that i usually do..)

but i got very vocal and said,.enough..enough of the damn lies...i will not stand for it!! Not around me it will not be tolerated!!

...call him out ..embarass him..and call him a liar..and expose this person each and every time..

think of a child and the bar of soap..warning..be his bar of soap!! lies should not be allowed by any of us to stand as truth..

ever!

15. Don't give up on him
You may not change him from being a Bush-loving Republican, but hopefully you can occasionally inject some reality into his life. (Let me guess, he says that Bush's big problem is that he is not conservative enough?)

And, if he does send out RW emails, please respond all with a thorough debunking. We let too much of that email shit go in the 90s and early part of this century and much of it has taken on a grain of truth because it has been around for so long.
