I think what is amazing about this is the fanfare about the debunk. It's like they're going out of the way to spout that they debunked the story. I think it's more than them wanting to spank Fox for pushing it--- NO... I think it's the beginning of a new day for the MSM.

What brought it on? US. That's right...us. Us and folks like Media Matters, TPM, Atrios, Digby, Huffington, and on and on and on. CNN is starting to see that it may not be good business to continue being the mouthpiece of a very unpopular Republican party.

This is why I think that Al Gore has a very very good chance of succeeding big this time around. He didn't have an army watching his back in 2000. Plus...everything that was made up about him back then has been debunked 10 times over which leaves limited bullshit narratives for the whores of the MSM to make-up. AND if they did, they're going to get annililated just like Fox did with the madrassa fiction.

What CNN did was significant and most certainly a good sign that things are changing.

1. ... its just CNN wanting to pimpslap the competition ...
... like anyone's really going to believe that CNN is honest and accurate after watching Wolf et al lick Bush's boots for the past 6 years??

3. Or, they went to Jakarta to dig up dirt and came up empty so justified
the expense of doing the story by actually telling the truth! :wow:

4. Agreed. This is a complete reversal from matters like the Swifties
The media were strictly part of the gallery on the swiftboat bullshit festival. It's nice to see this turn.

5. I'm happy CNN actually did it
They are one of the worst as far as letting total bullcrap get into the collective conscious.

Just makes me wonder who's going to get fired at Fox Fabrication Studios for this whopper. (No, I don't expect it...they probably collapsed his desk with "Attaboy" memos.)

It IS the home of Bill O'LIElly and Sean InSANITY, right? TRUTH is NEVER on their agenda. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Roger Ailes made the story up himself.

6. I think it's significant also.
Everyone is also watching as Keith Olbermann dominate. The thing that makes him so successful is debunking a lot of lies.

I think CNN may be seeing he mess we are in from following and lying for this current administration. Lou Dobbs has been pretty outspoken lately.

8. Couldn't Agree More
Remember that CNN's genius leadership began to shift rightward as a reaction to Faux grabbing a ratings lead, even though it was still only a tiny fraction of viewers. They tried to out-Fox Faux. (A monumentally stupid business decision and marketing folly.)

But, we know for sure that they will slide the direction of popular opinion, and since Faux is in decline, they might as well kick them when they're down.

I think you're right on target.

9. I hope so but I'll really
believe that there has been a turn when one of the right wingers comes on and starts spewing a lie and is told that he is lying and he/she can't say that or get off the show.

11. OTOH, all the debunking still gets the story out there.
Like the old yellow-journalism gag -

Editor to reporter:
"Ask him if it's true that he spent goverment money remodeling his house."
"But that's not true. Nobody's even suggested it."
"Who care? Just get him on the record denying it."

Before the debunking came out I never heard any suggestion that he had attended a madrassa. Now, the story is everywhere and some knuckledraggers, who don't have the imagination to have thought of it themselves, will refuse to believe the denials. The denial created the story.

13. Fox has gotten themselves into a tussle with NBC and now CNN
has joined in. I've never seen a network go after another like this before. This may very well be the beginning of Fox's demise. If they keep it up, they like Bush, will be marginalized to the point of obscurity.

about its minor contributions to the public discourse. They could have helped prevent a war and it seems they're banging the drums for another. My respect level for CNN is weakening not strengthening.

20. CNN's Beck Helped Spread This Crap
Let me also throw in Whorie Kurtz on Sunday who played up this story and has Jonah Golberg "comment" on it.

The good thing is to see the outrage this story has created in some areas, but debunking means little if we don't find out who originated this slime attack. It also means little when those who pass along this slime and then pretend they are just "following up on a story" or some other lame excuse, aren't taken to task for their spreading of this and other obvious slime attacks.
