What were your numbers?

Is there something about the word "authoritarian" that you don't understand?

29. What's the big deal?
The eye-rolling is because of the assumption that everyone here should be a libertarian leftist.

30. There's no assumption.
In fact, I think the OP was phrased as an extremely straightforward question.

Whether or not you're comfortable with it, the fact of the matter IS that the majority of the folks here fall onto the "libertarian left" quadrant of the graph; most people here support Roe v. Wade. Most people here think that it should be legal for gays to get married. Most people here think that if consenting adults want to look at pictures or films of other consenting adults having sex in the privacy of their own homes, the government shouldn't be in the business of censoring it. Most people here think the drug war as it is currently waged is a sham and a waste, and most people here believe pot should be legalized, taxed, and regulated, again for consenting adults.

That's a vast majority of people here, even though it's by no means everyone- but it's also a very large segment of the United States population; a segment whose concerns and values along those lines are oftentimes not very well represented or spoken for by our party, and certainly not by the other party.

6. So it says I am this:
Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: -7.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.03

I'm left of Gandhi economically and almost on par with the political anarchy of the Dalai Lama, so thank god I'm not running for office or president of a multinational corporation. B-)

I suppose I could be a Greek God

12. In what way?
I'm way down in the bottom left corner. I never thought of the libertarian axis being related to the Libertarian party. Wouldn't Libertarians score in the bottom right corner and be kind of lonely there?

17. Just like republicans don't believe in a republic, the libertarian party
only cares about the liberty of their money. To be truthful, there are some Democrats who are only on nodding terms with democracy.
Like you I am down in the corner. Wish the country would join us.

16. No, this is a different one - written in Britain
As this poll shows, nearly everyone on DU ends up in the 'libertarian left' quadrant - but, as the authors explain, that is 'libertarian' as opposed to 'authoritarian', not the American Libertarian party. That quadrant gets Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama. When they plotted the 2004 Democratic presidential candidates, Dennis Kucinich and Al Sharpton were there; the others were (just) in the authoritarian right quadrant. Few modern politicians end up in the 'authoritarian left' segment - it's a mixed bag, with Stalin, Pope JP2 and the British National Party. Almost no-one ends up in the 'libertarian right' section - they have to give Milton Friedman as the example (though the British Liberal Democrat party can just stray into it).

Here's their current plot of world leaders:

19. Yeah, god forbid anyone should use anything other than a strict left-right economic axis.
Some of us are perfectly capable of distinguishing between our own small-l libertarian (oh noes! That word again!) views and the big-L Libertarian PARTY, thankyouverymuch.

Right, I know, some people get really pissed when pesky people assert that, say, the right of women to control their own bodies, the right of consenting adults to read or watch what they want without censorship, the right gays to marry, the right of consenting adults to make their own decisions about their own bodies.. some get Mad-Mad-MAD! when those are brought up as political issues in their own right--

--but you know what? If liberalism were, as it should be, synonymous with respect for the right of individuals to make their own decisions about their own lives and bodies, synonymous with the fight for civil liberties and the fight against censorship, synonymous with the proposition that the "drug war" is an idiotic sham, synonymous with the notion that terminally ill people should have the right to a pain-free exit of their own choosing, etc. etc. then maybe we wouldn't need other labels like 'left-libertarian' to describe ourselves. Unfortunately, as evidenced by the large numbers of authoritarian control types in the Democratic Party and even here on DU, the "l" word- as distasteful :eyes: as you may find it- is necessary.

libertarian!
