It mystifies me. No one else in his immediate family talks like that, and it doesn't sound like a Texas accent at all, either.

28. What was the reasoning behind the DNC allowing Bush to co-opt
their event? Was he asked to appear or did he request it? This is ridiculous bullshit and it just muddies the water for the Democrats. This was stupid, stupid, stupid...

30. It's beyond me. I don't have a clue why the Dems would give him a platform.
Some deal they're trying to make?

I would presume that's the reason. Or, HE asked to speak--in his puppet-masters' "make Bush over into a 'cooperator'" game (now that the Dems control Congress)--and he "got 'em"--they can't say no to a polite request by the Resident.

But applause? That I don't get. Could mean "deal." Could be the "Blue Dog" Dems (traitors to the working class).

What could the "deal" be? The Dems have pretty much run over him with a bus on the "first 100 hours" agenda. What ELSE do they intend to go for?

You see, the real Dems have the problem of the traitor Dems (people legitimately elected vs. those (s)elected by Diebold/ES&S), which weakens their numbers significantly. On many important issues (the war being one of them), they cannot count on a majority. Also, they have Stupid's veto to contend with (not to mention tyrannical "signing statements"). They could pass things on principle--and let Wingnut veto them or "sign" himself exempt from them--looking toward '08. But if they REALLY want to get something done NOW--something, or somethings, that are critically important to the welfare of the country, and cannot be delayed--then they have to immunize those things against a veto (and against a "signing statement" veto).

So, how to reel Bush in, and get some cooperation on those critical things--or one way to do it--is to give him a photo op, and let him play his masters' game of him now being 'the cooperator.'

What I don't quite get (or, among the things I don't quite get), is the escalation of the war in Iraq (estimate now is 50,000 troops--with the game being that support troops become combat troops, and support is given over to private contractors in billions of dollars more of no-bid, unaccountable contracts), and the saber-rattling against Iran and gathering of a U.S. NAVAL FLEET in the Persian Gulf (--and how many U.S. military personnel does THAT increase the U.S. forces in the Middle East by?). Anyway, this is such an egregious violation of the will of the people--and involves such an egregious violation of the "balance of powers" with Congress--that you'd think that almost ANY Democrat would just as soon spit on Bush as invite him to their meeting (or tolerate his presence there, if he invited himself).

Maybe it's the "green" energy thing. There is grave reason to accelerate that. Global warming is as much of a crisis as the war is--and may be even more serious, ultimately. Death of the planet. And Bush made some "green" statements in the SOTU--completely lame and more than completely hypocritical (twisted gargoyle hypocrisy--180 degrees of hypocrisy)--but still, he said them. Are the Dems in Congress thinking they can segue those statements into meaningful legislation to help stop global warming? We may think them gullible, but we are not in their position--trying to DO something--in impossible circumstances--about the gravest world crisis ever.

The war and global warming are two things that might elicit Dem applause of Bush, if they thought they could make headway by a bit of toadying. I don't see them stopping the war(s)--yet anyway. So global warming (some pending deal) may well be the thing that explains this disgusting spectacle. Best scenario anyway (--giving our Dems the benefit of the doubt).
