US struggling to staff new Baghdad embassy

When the new US embassy in Baghdad opens later this summer it will be one of the more noticeable achievements of the war.

The £300 million, 27-building complex on the banks of Tigris River will have its own water purification system, fire service, school and housing for more than 380 families.

Located inside the Green Zone, the already highly fortified government compound, it will be a state within a state within a country. The only problem is it may not have enough people.

The US state department is struggling to find diplomats to work at what, despite four protective walls, will still be regarded as the world’s most dangerous location and a severe risk to mental health.

3. We should just hand over this monument of US arrogance to the Iraqis.

I don't recall any US citizens, even among the RW lunatic fringe, demanding that this monstrosity be built.

No doubt the Iraqis could make better use of its facilities than we ever could. MKJ

5. It won't be handed over because the US will
leave, but it will fittingly be the largest white Rethug elephant in history.

8. Tax break and spend Republicans are draining the country dry
with their selfserving, political, ill advised, frivolous, bullshit, pork projects, in a time of war. Why do they hate America? Why do they always do these silly things that weaken the country when she's down and embolden the terrorists. The GOP's weakening of America by it's frivolous tax break and spend bullshit enables the fascistOterraists all over the globe.

The GOP needs to stop playing POLITICS with American lives!

10. They don't care all that much. Bush cronies got paid plenty for the
construction contracts, so they will have lined their pockets whether the embassy sits empty or not.
