Lieberman's Support For GOP Sparks Increase In Liberal Fundraising

Liberal Group Encourages Lieberman To Keep Raising Money — for the Other Side
By CQ Staff

By Greg McDonald, CQ Staff

It’s not every day a lawmaker gets blamed for helping the other side. But then again, when that lawmaker is Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, it’s hard to tell which side he’s on.

Is he a Democrat — he does chair a committee — or an independent, as he’s referred to in the Senate? Or is he — as the liberal group Moveon.org suggested Wednesday — a pro-war senator intent on helping pro-war Republicans get re-elected.

Moveon.org jumped on Lieberman for helping Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, raise money for her 2008 re-election campaign.

Lieberman and Collins have worked closely for years on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Lieberman now chairs. Collins has been targeted by liberal Democrats who think she has too often supported the administration’s Iraq policy.

But liberal groups also see Lieberman as a liability, not a help to GOP candidates. Moveon.org says it was able to raise a whopping $355,000 during a 24-hour e-mail fundraising campaign for anti-war House members Tom Allen, D-Maine, and Patrick J. Murphy, D-Pa. Allen plans to challenge Collins for her Senate seat.

“We encourage Sen. Lieberman to do fundraisers for other Republican senators who support the Iraq War,” said Moveon.org Executive Director Eli Pariser.

2. The Move-On People, Ma'am, Are On To Something
And defeating Collins must be a high priority next year: there is no excuse for any Republican Senator representing a New England state nowadays....

3. Moveon did the right thing...
Support whichever Democrat that's running against the Republicans Lieberman helps. Make him poison to the Republicans.
If we manage to defeat Collins in '08, I think the GOP won't be calling on Joe any more to help out with fundraising.

Then again, if we pick up a few more seats, we can tell Joe to sit down.
