Healthy applause at 'Sicko'

America's most controversial documentary filmmaker, Michael Moore, hit the red carpet Monday night for the premiere of "Sicko" at the Ziegfeld on W. 54th St.

The latest from the "Fahrenheit 9/11" director explores the ins, outs and injustices of United States health care.

The film has already created controversy. Moore may have broken U.S. trade laws when he took a group of ill-served American patients to Cuba for proper treatment, among them a group of World Trade Center rescue workers who fell ill after exposure to toxins at Ground Zero.

EMT John Graham, a member of Moore's Cuban mission, had only praise for the director.

"Thank you is a word that's used too little," he told us, surrounded by beaming family members, "but I said it again and again, and I'll probably say it to him tonight."

Firefighter Bobby Joe Painchaud had a different endearment for Moore: "He's got balls!"

Celebs including Fran Drescher, Carol Alt, Rachel Roy & Damon Dash, Morgan Spurlock (of "Supersize Me" fame), Russell Simmons and Richard Belzer turned out for the screening. But those in the film hope Moore can carry his message farther and wider. .....(more)
