The Washington Post reported that the CDC issued its recommendations for emergency preparedness in case of a flu pandemic, complete with an official pandemic website and an 84 page glossy booklet (which you can download on the site link, "Pandemic Influenza Preparedness, Response, and Recovery Guide for Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources.") Hoo boy, this is about as entertaining as ready.gov!
Let's see what jewels I can glean from this website in case we are all overcome with an Avian Flu pandemic....
1. Be prepared for "widespread social disruption". (Hmmm...I wonder if illness and death counts as "social disruption.")
2. Ask your employer how business will continue during a pandemic, and then, check with your employer on leave policies. (If any of my employees asked me that, I think the truthful answer is "How the hell do I know?" That leave policy thing is pretty funny, too. I can see the average boss getting the phone call with half the workforce gone and someone saying "Uh, I'm going to go on leave now.")
3. Plan on losing income. (They should have had GW Bush work on this one, b/c he would have told everyone to go shopping.)
4. Expect your kids to be out of school for several months, so have learning activities handy. Help them realize they're going to have to play with siblings and not other children. (Ok, let me get this straight...you're home sick, dying of the flu, and meanwhile, don't forget to homeschool. Yeah, I always keep three months of lesson plans around the house in case of emergency...and if your kid is an only child, better get started now on getting another playmate in the family.)
