Calling all South Floridians who are pissed how off the Cuban rightwingers clamp down on free speech
Edited on Sat Feb-03-07 03:56 AM by RagingInMiami
Longtime Miami activist Jack Lieberman sees it as one of Miami’s most annoying ironies: That way a small segment of Cuban exiles celebrate democracy by trampling on other people’s First Amendment rights.

But what really annoys him, he says, is how local media and politicians seem to condone this behavior.

For example, he says, not a single politician or The Miami Herald denounced last month’s incident where a group of right-wing Cuban exiles assaulted a group of left-wing college students in Little Havana, despite the fact the incident was fully recorded by a local TV news crew.

This is why Lieberman helped organize the Rally to Defend Free Speech in Miami, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. this Saturday at the Torch of Friendship in downtown Miami. More than 250 people are expected to attend the rally, which was endorsed by more than 50 South Florida activists groups, ranging from extreme left groups like the Bolivarian Youth, who fully support communism, to antiwar groups like Veterans for Peace, who fully support democracy.

"I don’t know of too many other cities in the country where people can be assaulted in the streets two months in a row because they’re exercising views that are politically unpopular," said Lieberman, a member of the South Florida Peace and Justice Network, a coalition of activist groups from the tri-county South Florida area.

2. I lived in Miami for two years...
I was amazed at the amount of power the RW Cubans have there. They're basically running the show, as far as Miami (a some of the surrounding townships) are concerned.

The phrase RW Cuban Mafia comes to mind...

4. People are free to have disagreements
People are not free to employ force, intimidation, and even terror to silence voices with which they disagree. That's simply authoritarianism.

5. Normalize relations w/ Cuba
That would vastly reduce the power of the rw Cubans. It is insane that we have normal relations with China and Vietnam, but let this tiny, violently rw minority dictate foreign policy towards a neighbor.

I enjoy reading Jose Latour's novels. Latour enjoys showing the multifaceted Cubano community. In his Comrades in Miami, a local business engages in greymarket buying in the EUA and selling via Mexico and points south to the island. The novel features repressive FBI tactics against a putatively innocent tourist. Some hilarity, some political insight to both sides of the straits, for sure good reading.

Then there's Leonardo Padura's Adios Hemingway, a novel set in contemporary Cuba revolving around the writer's legend.

Although the counter democracy movement is alive and well in certain segments of the Miami community, a writer's voice can't be silenced by the bums. They can thump you for speaking, but they can't stop you from reading and informing yourself.
