more food crops ruined, this time in Bulgaria

this is from an email alert from RSOE HAVARIA Emergency Disaster Info. Serv.

The spring draught in Bulgaria has wiped out13 000 hectares of wheat in the country and another 4 000 hectares of barley, data from the Agriculture Ministry showed on Wednesday. Torrential rains last month have flooded another 4 000 hectares of agricultural farmland, their harvest lost, according to the total damage claims reviewed by ministry experts as of June 15. The regions hit worst by the floods are the districts around capital Sofia, as well as Plovdiv and Pazardzhik in the central part of the country. The final tally of the crops destroyed by the draught and floods this year will be announced at a later date, but initial forecasts show that the wheat harvest alone will fall by at least 30% from last year's 3,2 million tonnes, the ministry said.

1. Many areas are seeing increasingly severe swings between drought and flood
I live in Missouri, and am seeing it here. We got an excessive amount of moisture this spring and had some flooding. This came after a two year drought though, and barely managed to recharge the water table and ground water levels. Now, here it is in June, up in the ninties, and it is starting to increasingly look like drought weather again.

I think that this is going to be the pattern for awhile, periods of excess water and excess drought, with no normal happy middle. I need to dig a cistern to start storing all of the spring run-off for later irrigation use.

2. The elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about is this:
What happens when EVERY food-growing region has "crop failures" in the same year???
