Bush faces his own Ruby Ridge or Waco in New Hampshire as domestic terrorist militia nuts take stand
Edited on Tue Jan-23-07 09:30 AM by IanDB1
The local news this morning reported that domestic terrorist militia groups from around the country are gathering on this man's property.

I suppose that Bush's remaining 28% approval will dip even further if he were to start firing at the members of his political base:

Man Barricades Self in Home After Tax Trial

Concord, N.H. (Jan. 22, 2007) - A New Hampshire man has said that he will defend himself against capture on tax charges if necessary, according to U.S. marshals.

The government said that they have no plan of escalating the situation, after a jury decided that Edward and Elaine Brown plotted to hide their income and avoid taxes on Elaine’s nearly $2 million income between 1996 and 2003. According to the jury, over the past decade, the couple also used more than $215,000 of postal money orders to pay for their hilltop compound and for Elaine Brown's dental offices.

A jury also found that Elaine didn't pay adequate taxes for her practice's employees, all of which lead to a total of 17 felony convictions.

According to local newspapers, since Edward Brown heard of the verdict in the middle of an interview with a radio station, he has since stayed in his wooded, 110-acre home -- which features a watchtower that offers 360-degree views of the rural setting -- and all the while quoting the state’s official motto, "Live free or die.”

<snip>

In the meanwhile, Ed Brown, a retired exterminator, has stayed home to protest the system that he has said has already convicted him. And during the past few decades, Brown has claimed membership in several anti-government and militia groups.

The right tax verdict: Payment not optional

Edward and Elaine Brown, the Plainfield couple who have not paid federal income taxes for nearly a decade, are right to hate the U.S. tax code.

Like a coral reef, the 20,000-plus-page code was built by accretion. It is the incomprehensible product of some well-meaning attempts to direct social policy and many self-serving efforts by politicians to reward friends for personal or political gain.

But even though the tax code is an abomination, it's also the law.

The Browns, who were convicted yesterday of numerous counts of tax evasion, broke that law repeatedly and now must suffer the consequences. In Ed Brown's case, we hope the consequences don't include paying with his life. We especially hope he or his supporters, in defense of their views, don't take the lives of anyone else.

As we write, the retired exterminator and a small group of people who agree with his position are holed up at his Plainfield home. Attempts to remove him, Brown warns, will result in a shootout. Elaine Brown surrendered before the verdict and was ordered not to return home. Law enforcement agencies are negotiating with Brown and reportedly have no plans to assault his fortified house.

Couple face conspiracy charges

A husband-and-wife pair of self-described militia members from Plainfield was arrested yesterday and charged with evading more than half a million dollars in federal income taxes.

Elaine A. Brown, a dentist with a practice in Lebanon, was indicted in New Hampshire U.S. District Court on charges of tax evasion, conspiracy, disguising large financial transactions and failing to collect employment taxes from her employees, a total of 21 felonies. Her husband, Edward Lewis Brown, was indicted on charges of conspiracy and hiding financial transactions, eight felonies total. Both Browns pleaded not guilty at their arraignments yesterday.

Bill Morse, the assistant United States attorney handling the case, said that he believed Edward Brown was "heavily armed and dangerous" and should be held without bail until the couple's trials in July. He described the badge Brown wears as a national commander of The Constitutional Rangers of the Continental Congress of 1777 and the 35 guns that Brown says he owns. Morse said recent improvements to the Browns' home made it "essentially a fortress." He also repeated a series of inflammatory statements that Brown has made to newspaper reporters, local police officers and FBI agents who have interviewed him.

"He believes the federal government is plotting to take all of our freedoms away," Morse said

<snip>

Over the last decade, Edward Brown, a retired cockroach exterminator, has claimed membership in several anti-government militia groups including the Constitution Rangers of the Continental Congress of 1777, the Constitution Defense Militia, and the Unamerican Activities Investigations Commission, which he founded.

1. A retired exterminator?
There must be something in all that bug spray that turns your brains to shit. Seems like I've heard about another former bugman with similarly fucked up ideas.

3. Take his freedoms away? The man is just nuts.
"Elaine Brown plotted to hide their income and avoid taxes on Elaine’s nearly $2 million income between 1996 and 2003. According to the jury, over the past decade, the couple also used more than $215,000 of postal money orders to pay for their hilltop compound and for Elaine Brown's dental offices.

A jury also found that Elaine didn't pay adequate taxes for her practice's employees, all of which lead to a total of 17 felony convictions."

With that kind of an income you would think he would be happy. No, $2 million is not enough for him, he has to steal more. I'll bet he's a repuke. What an idiot.

5. Elaine's employees should sue her ass.
If she didn't pay their taxes, that leaves them up the creek, right?

They should sue for damages.

22. It depends
If they have check stubbs that show withholding of taxes they are not liable.On the other hand,if they dont have stubs or they signed 1099 forms they are very much liable for taxes owed plus interest.

6. Maybe he's not nuts... while protesting the unconstitutional way our Gov. goes about tax...
Edited on Tue Jan-23-07 10:42 AM by mikelewis
collection procedures and regulations seems sort of like a waste of time, the argument is not without merit... Here is a movie that discusses the POV of the tax protesters and the argument is compelling. {Not compelling enough for me to fight the IRS's goons over it but enough to keep me from believing the MSM's idea that the guy is just a nut case}

Oh yeah... and calling him a terrorist is a bit overboard, don't ya think? What terrorist activity is he engaging in?

7. An open mind is indeed in order here.
The Brown's might indeed be wingnuts, but seriously, how many at DU feel good about where their federal taxes get spent these days.

13. So war tax resisters are also traitors?
I notice nobody here on DU willing to go as far as Emerson did.

Seems like when it comes to protesting the federal government, the far right still feels the wind in their sails and the fire in the belly.

Meanwhile, People on the so-called "left" think merely blocking traffic or boycotting a store is an act of violence.

That's unfortunate.

19. most war tax resistors I know, which is admittedly only
a very few people, deduct only the portion of their tax payment which would be allocated to the defense budget, and pay the remainder with a letter stating exactly what they are doing.
This guy Brown, is against paying anything.

Yet he doesn't seem to mind wasting big tax $ causing a scene for his own enjoyment,and the media attention, as well as playing the federal court like it was a juke box.

18. na, our NH constitution has the only 'right to revolution' in the country-
so 'treason' is questionable- And having said that, I gotta say, I don't support or agree with this guy. His motivation seems to be one of greed and the desire to be in the spotlight- but I also think the agents dealing with him know this, and are responding to him with this in mind.

I think it will be a while before the Govt. feels the need to push his envelope.

12. Tough call - at over $200,000 income per year, this is Bush's base
The kind of couple he's aimed his tax cuts at, so they'll contribute to Republican election funds. Can he afford to piss people like them off by throwing their arses in jail? They're the kind of people who really do deserve to be asked "if you hate the USA so much, why don't you leave?"

Quote from first paragraph: "The local news this morning reported that domestic terrorist militia groups from around the country are gathering on this man's property"
We'll get every puke, libertarian, or other conservative idiot to come to his defense, and we can take 'em all out in one swipe.

The sad part is, some ATF or IRS agent might wind up getting shot over this crap. It sounds like they're going to handle it the smart way; lay off and pick 'em up when they get tired of playing Massada.
