Americans Unready to Revolt, Despite Revolting Conditions

by Joel S. Hirschhorn
14 June 2007

The latest NBC/Wall Street Journal national poll results vividly show a population incredibly dissatisfied with their nation's political system. In other countries in other times such a depressing level of confidence in government would send a signal to those running the government that a major upheaval is imminent. But not here in the USA. Why?

First, here are the highlights of the poll that surveyed 1,008 adults from June 8-11, with a margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points.

A whopping 68 percent think the country is on the wrong track. Just 19 percent believe the country is headed in the right direction - the lowest number on that question in nearly 15 years. And most of those with the positive view are probably in the Upper Class.

Bush's approval rating is at just 29 percent, his lowest mark ever in the survey. Only 62 percent of Republicans approve, versus 32 percent who disapprove. Take Republicans out of the picture and a fifth or less of Americans have a positive view of Bush.

Even worse, only 23 percent approve of the job that Congress is doing. So much for that wonderful new Democratic control of Congress. Bipartisan incompetence is alive and well.

6. Me too Proud.
I think we are in one hell of a mess and as long as people keep their heads in the sand believing that they do not have to do anything because their "party" is going to take care of it (certainly they will, won't they? They have to, they are so much better than the other guys because they are MY party) we will roll on down this hill and the bottom is going to be a very hard place to land. But that is OK, someone who is not "on our side" never has anything to offer in way of a solution.

I am with you.

17. That's my K!
I feel like we are being totally played by some of them, if not most of them. I am losing interest in the 2 party system, well I have lost interest finally.

That deal was it for me. I am glad I am not a Democrat anymore because shit like that just can't be allowed to go on and I really thought (yes, still trying to believe) that they would never do something like that.

I admit that I have just about given up. I won't of course, but it is getting harder to see anything left to save.

Maybe tomorrow will be better (see? I keep trying to keep trying).

16. what revolting conditions...?
most everyone that i know has a car, a colour tv, plenty to eat, decent clothes, lots of life's little playthings, etc...

people are too busy enjoying their lives to stage a revolution.

when the standard of living REALLY DOES fall to the level of "revolting"- there's a much better chance that the people will be.

with less than 10% of the population disaffected, revolt ain't too likely.

especially if they lower interest rates.

27. Maybe the condition
of our political system? Even people with much can't help but feel like they are getting kicked in the teeth by this administration and the wealthy. Hell, I am in good shape and I resent the hell out of what is going on. Just because people are doing OK does not mean they would not get up and do something.

Yes, being comfortable makes them less likely to revolt but they will not have to lose it all to get angry enough. Let's just hope they reach that point when there is still something left to be saved.

35. The polls indicate
that the populace is waking up. They are not happy with either partiy and they see their children's future looking more and more bleak. I don't quite agree with you. I would have agreed last year at this time but not now. I do agree that we are most likely not going to see them take to the streets like we wish they would but I would put that down to simply trying to get by in an environment that seems to favor only the very wealthy.

the change (if any) in the number of people exercising their right to vote in 11/08 will be the best gauge as to the anger of the populace.
