Can a good Muslim be a good American (crappy email I got)

Okay, my fine friends...I resent my reply to this one but I want to send more. This is a bogus email going around so maybe you have seen it:

This was sent to me by a high school classmate who is married to an Episcopalian Priest.

Subject: Fw: Muslims

A friend sent this and I thought it might be enlightening. We don't need a revolt from within.

This is something Americans wondered about for some time now: How & why do the
Muslims hate us & everyone else so much? Doesn't their God teach them to
love?Can a good Muslim be a good American? I sent that question to a friend who
worked in Saudi Arabia for 20 years (and hated every second of it no doubt.)

The following is his reply:

Theologically - no. Because his allegiance is to Allah, the moon god of
Arabia. (What's wrong with the moon? You hate the moon?)

Religiously - no. Because no other religion is accepted by his Allah except
Islam (Quran, 2:256) (If you're a fundie you are not allowed to read about other religions)

Scripturally - no. Because his allegiance is to the five pillars of Islam
and the Quran (Koran).

Geographically - no. Because his allegiance is to Mecca, to which he turns
in prayer five times a day. (And our allegiance is to money...Las Vegas here we come!)

Socially - no. Because his allegiance to Islam forbids him to make friends
with Christians or Jews. (Sorry, I'm a Jew and can't go visit St. Patrick's Cathederal with you. My religion forbids it." Actual quote from a girl who just married a Jewish guy and we were on a business trip in New York City.)

Intellectually - no. Because he cannot accept the American Constitution
since it is based on Biblical principles and he believes the Bible to be
corrupt. (Bush: "It's just a damn piece of paper.")

Philosophically - no. Because Islam, Muhammad, and the Quran do not allow
freedom of religion and expression. Democracy and Islam cannot co-exist.
Every Muslim government is either dictatorial or autocratic. (Bush: "Heh, heh, it'd be a lot easier if this were a dictatorship...as long as I was in charge, heh, heh.)

Spiritually - no. Because when we declare "one nation under God," the
Christian's God is loving and kind, while Allah is NEVER referred to as
heavenly father, nor is he ever called love in The Quran's 99 excellent
names. (God is not so loving in the old testament...Take no hostages, kill all, even the animals)

Therefore after much study and deliberation (bet you haven't read a book since high school)....perhaps we should be very cautious (be very afraid) of MUSLIMS in this country. They obviously cannot be both "good" Muslims and good Americans. (Ha, ha, just wait till those 7,000 refugees come to your town!)

Call it what you wish....it's still the truth.

If you find yourself intellectually in agreement with the above statements,
perhaps you will share this with your friends. The more who understand this,
the better it will be for our country and our future.

Why must we demonize whole groups of people because of the actions of a few?

I spent some time on Java in the 90s and was surprised to see a Church, Synagogue and Mosque lined up together on a main street. Then I came home to Texas and started asking where the Mosques were. I found them in non-descript buildings with no obvious markings. The Muslim community was, as early as that, living in fear of our brand of religious tolerance.

Not true. Turkey is a successful Muslim democracy. Not only that, but it is, unlike an increasingly restive "Christian" government here in the U.S., resolutely secular. Think about it for a second. The United States is roughly 60% Christian, and yet the ultra-right, anti-democracy conservative Christians insist that the U.S. must have an officially Christian government. Turkey is about 97% Muslim, and yet every call for the government to be officially Muslim is turned back by people who understand that Turkey's democracy will not work if the official policy is to exclude certain religions.

Just because a Muslim turns to Mecca to pray doesn't mean he has any allegiance to it. No more so than a Christian does to any of the shrines in Jerusalem with the stations of the cross, or the Wailing Wall for the Jews who pray at it. It's just absurd and ignorant.

There is NOTHING that makes me more angry than implying that someone's ethnicity or religion (or lack of religion) makes them less of a citizen, or means that their loyalty is more under suspicion than anyone else's.
