More outrageous remarks about Shawn Hornbeck on O'Reilly Factor
More outrageous remarks about Shawn Hornbeck on O'Reilly Factor
Reported by Chrish - January 23, 2007 -

Bill O'Reilly's guest tonight 1/22/07 was Jamie Allman, identified as a Radio Talk Show Host from St. Louis. It was not mentioned that he is part of the FOX News Radio lineup, so these two corporate brothers were reinforcing each other and simulating more widespread agreement on the issue. O'Reilly is following the tried and true tactic of repeating a lie often enough that it becomes truth and the original statement will be lost, but not if I can help it.

"The situation that Hearst found herself in was exciting. She had a boring life, she was a child of privilege, all of a sudden she's in with a bunch of charismatic thugs, and she enjoyed it.
And I think, when it all comes down, what's gonna happen is, there was an element here that this kid liked about his circumstances".

Don't forget that - that is what he said 1/15/07.

So tonight, day 5 of damage control, O'Reilly continues to claim that all he did was ask the question on everyone's mind - why didn't Shawn run? He had ample opportunity. He continues to ignore his comments, above, that speculate on the answer and assign very unsavory motives to the child victim, and that smear his family and home life before the kidnapping.

Tonight O'Reilly relied heavily on a Newsweek article that detailed gifts given to the boy by his captor, Devlin, and also cites sister company New York Post (without revealing that connection either) as saying that the boy's father, Walter Hornbeck, (biological, not noted) is a convicted sex offender. (He squints and grimaces at this.) He said it's a very bizarre case and we've raised questions about it from the beginning we've said Shawn is a victim (that's his run-on sentence) - what we don't know is how the victimization manifested itself.

Note: O'Reilly was using the royal "we" in his statements, as he often does. This allows him to make statements without taking responsibility for them.

1. There is a book about this woman that was kidnapped and kept in a box under this guy's bed for YEARS
There were pictures of the box and the other torture things used. The point I am making is that he (the kidnapper) took her home and she stayed with her family for three days. This was a grown woman that was so scared and cowed. Shawn was a child.

This woman also wrote "love" letters to her kidnapper. She explained later that the nicer she was to him, the nicer he was to her.

I wish I knew how to do more digging about this story. It was a huge thing at the time and a book written about it. DOn't know if there was a movie or not.

11. I have that book... it's called Perfect Victim
The case was called "The Girl in the Box". Her real name is Colleen Stan, if anyone feels like looking into it.

12. The woman DID eventually escape, and if I remember, the kidnapper's wife even
helped, even though she'd been an accomplice to the whole thing (he didn't exactly treat HER great, either).

There was a whole long, elaborate process of brainwashing and breaking down of this woman's will and "personhood". She spent long periods of time where her head was completely enclosed in a box, and was tortured etc. A very screwed up and horrible scenario.

Dude got sentenced to a lot of prison time after he was caught.

2. here's what the FBI agent on Oprah's show had to say about that . . .
too bad Oprah herself didn't heed his advice . . . her interview with Shawn and his parents was a disgrace . . .

Dr. Clint Van Zandt is a former FBI profiler, an MSNBC analyst and the author of the book Facing Down Evil. He is also the victim of a child snatching that he was lucky enough to quickly escape from when he was 7 years old. As a victim and a law enforcement officer, Clint says he understands why people in Shawn and Ben's situation wouldn't call home.

Clint warns people not to buy into the "psychobabble" they might hear on television. "The bottom line is if you're 11 or 13 and you've got a potentially 6-foot-4, 300-pound aggressor…you do what you have to do to survive sometimes," Clint says.

During Ben and Shawn's healing process, Clint says it's imperative not to ask one simple question. "What we don't want to do is say, 'Why?' Why didn't you call? Why didn't you pick up the phone?" Clint says. "Because he was traumatized. Because he was frightened. Because he was in a survival mode. There are emotional handcuffs. There are psychological prisons we can be in without bars."

Clint also says to give these boys time. "We need to give these two kids some slack and let them have time to find themselves," Clint says. "Let them create new memories."

and from the St. Louis Dispatch . . .

Psychological chains as strong as physical ones

9. Oprah really disappointed me with this one
It was disgraceful of her to exploit this child. Like she needs the ratings?

3. As usual O'Reilly panders to ignorance
It's much easier to reinforce ignorance than to educate ... O'Reilly is a master at reinforcing ignorance

5. He brought up Patty Hearst?
Oh, great analogy! :sarcasm:

Hearst was almost 20 when she was kidnapped: an adult. Hornbeck was 11. Anyone who tries to compare the two cases is clearly being deeply dishonest.

6. I think Keith Olbermann pointed out that Billo
had been asked to be a keynote speaker for a center for missing and exploited children.

Did I hear that right?

And has the invitation been rescinded yet?

And if not, why not?

7. This guy is an arrogant jerk. I can't believe there isn't more outrage about
his statements in this awful case. Blaming this kid for his victimization is one of the lowest and most disgusting things I have heard. And this swine is doing it for ratings. He acts like the moral authority of the airwaves, yet he's a known liar and pervert and apparently finds it appropriate to exploit this child and his ordeal for his own greedy purposes. That is immoral, unethical, cold, craven and soulless.

8. The kid's family should hire Attorney Wayne Grant
Report: Richard Jewell to get more than $500,000 from NBC
Cleared Olympic bombing suspect reported 'very satisfied'

<SNIP>

NBC spokeswoman Beth Comstock refused to confirm the reported amount of the settlement. And Jewell attorney Wayne Grant said, "We did not disclose the terms of the settlement to The Wall Street Journal, and I can't comment on its report."

The case centered on comments anchorman Tom Brokaw made on the air after Jewell was named a possible suspect in the July 27 blast during a concert at Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park.

One woman was killed and more than 100 other people were injured. A cameraman on his way to cover the story died after having a heart attack.

What Brokaw said

Brokaw had said: "Look, they probably got enough to arrest him. They probably have got enough to try him." Brokaw has since emphasized that he finished his on-air remarks by saying: "Everyone, please understand absolutely he is only the focus of this investigation -- he is not even a suspect yet."

Jewell was cleared October 26.

10. Wow. Good for him for fighting back. I hope the Hornbecks will do the same.
These loudmouths need to be held to account for their hurtful and damaging comments.
