OFFICIALS: Subpoenas for Bush figures
Edited on Wed Jun-13-07 09:48 AM by cal04
Two congressional committees are issuing subpoenas for testimony from former White House counsel Harriet Miers and former political director Sara Taylor on their roles in the firings of eight federal prosecutors, according to two officials familiar with the investigation.

Democrats probing whether the White House improperly dictated which prosecutors the Justice Department should fire also are subpoenaing the White House for all relevant documents, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the move had not yet been formally made public.

The Senate Judiciary Committee's subpoena for Taylor compels her to testify on July 11, while the House Judiciary Committee's subpoena for Miers compels her testimony the next day.

"We'll review them and respond appropriately," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino.

1. Does "respond appropriately" = "ignore"?
Just curious... does anyone know what happened to the subpoena issued for Rice?
Is she in contempt?

3. Ignore is exactly what they'll do.
So far, I haven't heard they've done anything about Rice ignoring their subpoena. If you or I tried to get away with that, we'd find our sorry butts in jail - fast.

It's way past time for Congress to stop being weak, and start forcing the issue with this misadministration. Enough is enough!

7. June 19 hearing for both Tenet and Rice on uranium claims
From The Hill
May 14, 2007

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has secured the cooperation of former CIA Director George Tenet and sent a letter to National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley in its broadening probe into faulty pre-war Iraq intelligence.

Tenet has agreed to appear for a closed-door deposition regarding the now-discredited uranium claim in President Bush’s 2003 State of the Union address, which warned that Iraq was seeking to obtain uranium from Africa, according to a committee press release.

Yesterday’s announcement is part of the panel’s efforts to get testimony from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who was national security adviser at the time and helped oversee the drafting of the 2003 speech. In April, the panel’s Democratic majority issued a subpoena for Rice — over strong objections from GOP members — and asked her to testify today. Rice has not responded to either the subpoena or to previous letters by Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) asking her to appear in person and answer questions about the uranium claim.

In light of forthcoming information from Tenet, the committee will move its requested hearing date for Rice up to June 19, according to the release. Tenet is also slated to testify in the public hearing on that date.

.....

And don't miss this little tantrum by the WH:

Hadley is the third official whom the committee has contacted in this probe. The panel has requested a voluntary deposition from Hadley, who was Rice’s deputy in 2003.

The panel is holding off for now on deciding whether to subpoena Hadley if he does not respond.

A White House spokesman, Tony Fratto, said yesterday that testimony from Hadley is “clearly not going to happen.” Fratto added that a closed-door deposition or informal talks are also ruled out.

.....

We'll see about that, Mr. Fratto.

4. Gotta line up the lesser ducks
before you can take a shot at the big one. Makes sense to get some other testimony to Congress before you start asking Rove anything. Forces him to pull the 'can't recall' line at every question rather than try a lie to dispute previous testimony? Make him sit there and chant Alberto's mantra so all the viewers at home will start wondering why he can't answer a direct question. ;)
